How to grow bay leaves in a pot: improve the taste of pilaf and biryani

It is not necessary to buy bay leaves from the store; they can be easily grown in a pot. Bay leaves are one of the common spices used in our cuisine. They are added to dishes such as pilaf, biryani, and vegetable dishes to give them aroma and flavor.

Usually, people purchase bay leaves from stores, but there is an option to grow the plant in home pots. If you have a balcony, roof, or a small garden plot, you can easily plant the bay leaf plant. With proper care, the plant will gradually grow, and when needed, you can cut fresh leaves for cooking. Thus, you will not have to buy bay leaves from the store every time. It is important to note that this plant does not require much space to grow.

The plant that yields bay leaves can be planted in a pot at home, and it does not require much space for this. It is enough to plant one or two bay leaf plants in pots for home use. It can be regularly pruned to keep it compact and dense, according to your needs. This not only improves the appearance of the plant but also ensures a constant supply of fresh leaves for the kitchen.

Bay leaf plants can be found in local nurseries. Usually, the nursery has plants ranging from one to three feet in height. The cost may vary depending on the location and the size of the plant. If you have never grown spices before, the easiest way is to purchase a healthy plant from a nursery and plant it.

When planting bay leaves in a pot, it is crucial to pay attention to the soil. You need to use soil that will not retain water, meaning it should absorb and drain moisture well. To prepare the soil mixture, you can mix soil with sand or quartz sand, coconut substrate, and high-quality vermicompost. If the soil retains too much water, it is better to add sand or other drainage components.

There must be drainage holes at the bottom of the pot so that excess water can flow out. Bay leaf plants do not like constantly moist soil, and standing water can damage the roots.

To start growing bay leaves at home, you can take a pot with a diameter of about 12 inches. Depending on the plant's growth later, you can use a pot of 15 inches or larger. When planting the plant in the pot, first put a layer of potting mix. Then carefully remove the plant from the nursery bag and place it in the center of the pot. Make sure that the roots are not damaged excessively. After that, cover the soil around all sides and lightly tamp it down, and then water as needed.

Bay leaf plants prefer good lighting and sunlight. Therefore, they should be placed in a spot that receives enough sun. A balcony, roof, or part of the house where there are many hours of good light can work for this. If it gets very cold in your region during winter, the pot can be placed in a place where the plant is protected from severe cold. During periods of severe cold, the plant's growth may slow down.

After the plant grows, an important question arises about when to cut its leaves. For this, you need to pay attention to the color of the leaves. Dark green and fully formed leaves can be cut. Light green and young shoots are better left on the plant. It is best to use scissors rather than pulling them by hand to collect the leaves. This prevents branch damage and maintains the health of the plant.

If you want to store bay leaves for a long time, after harvesting the leaves, they should be cleaned and thoroughly dried. It is better to dry them in the shade rather than in direct sunlight to preserve their aroma and flavor. When the leaves are completely dry, they can be stored in an airtight container in the kitchen, and then the homegrown bay leaves can be used as needed.
