At 79, Reba Paul supports traditional Bengali art by creating Patachitra paintings

At the age of 79, artist Reba Paul continues to preserve the traditional art of Bengal—Patachitra—creating each painting individually.

For almost five decades, this artist from Krishnanagar, West Bengal, has been engaged in painting Hindu deities on paper and cloth, using natural colors and intricate detailing. She learned this craft from her husband, Yashti Paul, after marrying at the age of just 16. Together, they raised four children through their art.

After her husband passed away about twenty years ago, Reba faced financial difficulties. Nevertheless, she never gave up the art that supported her family. Today, she continues to paint, hoping that the next generation will carry on this artistic tradition.

Her story serves as a reminder that India's folk art traditions survive thanks to the dedication of artists in preserving them, even in the face of hardship. Supporting masters like Reba helps keep these cultural treasures alive for future generations.
