Head coach of Banyana Banyana, Desiree Ellis, is actively responding to demands for a team overhaul by implementing a clear strategy for the team's future. This action comes after the squad secured a 4–0 victory over Madagascar in the first leg of the second round of the 2028 Olympic qualifiers in Bloemfontein.
The match saw striker Ronnel Donnelly score a remarkable hat-trick, while Siyamthanda Qashani and Zoe October also featured in the game, benefiting from the favorable scoreline and the absence of some established senior players.
Ellis expressed satisfaction with the successful integration of new players, demonstrating her confidence in the entire roster. This comes particularly after facing criticism during a previous WAFCON tournament held in Morocco, which called for a complete restructuring of the squad.
Although acknowledging the necessity of long-term planning, Ellis stated that she cannot simply replace experienced players with newcomers without a gradual approach, emphasizing the need for a balance between both groups, which she managed during the time at the City of Roses.
She noted, “A lot of players who were expected to play didn’t play,” adding, “So, we have to look and see what we have going forward. We have to give other players, who haven’t played, an opportunity. We have to trust and believe in the squad. Otherwise, what are they doing here?” Furthermore, she mentioned the importance of assessing the contributions of all players, pointing out that a regular player, Bambanani (Mbane), is currently undergoing rehabilitation, necessitating readiness among other players to fill his position.
Подготовка к следующим этапам квалификации
With the team already advancing to the third round of the qualifiers, scheduled for early next year, Ellis plans to introduce even more new players in the return leg at the same location, the Toyota Stadium, on Tuesday evening at 6 pm. During this match, she will focus on exploring various tactical combinations and enhancing flexibility, especially in preparation for the World Cup qualifiers later in the year against unknown international opponents.
Ellis was also pleased with how a pairing of senior players adapted to the new system in Bloemfontein, highlighting the need for such tactical adaptability moving forward. She cited the performance against Madagascar in the first leg, where Linda (Motlhalo) played as a No. 6 and Noxolo (Cesane) played as a 10, as proof that players can step up when senior members are unavailable.
Concluding her thoughts, Ellis remarked that many of these players have been part of the team for some time, meaning they understand their roles. Having been given chances, the overall talent pool has expanded, leading to excitement about the growing core group.
