Representatives from religious, political, and business circles gathered for the grand opening of the Annapurna Medical Center. This ceremony marked the launch of the new medical facility and residential block, as well as the achievement of Chinmaya Mission's Nourish to Flourish program, which provided 530,000 meals.
The event took place in the Rajput Hall in Chatsworth on Sunday. The officially launched Annapurna Medical Center and Residential Block now provide free medical care to the local community. The residential complex is intended to house staff working on the Nourish to Flourish feeding program.
The organization summarized the work of the Nourish to Flourish program, which provides food to 2,000 needy people daily. Pawan Maharaj, a member of the Chinmaya Mission board of directors, reported that since its inception two years ago, the program has fed 530,000 students from underprivileged schools, non-profit organizations, and the wider community.
Maharaj noted that the new residential facility is a significant investment in the people whose daily dedication allows the preparation and provision of food to thousands of beneficiaries.
Les Govender, a member of the National Council of Provinces, shared his experience: visits to schools over the past eighteen months have improved thanks to the Nourish to Flourish program helping poor students with nutrition. He also emphasized that this program can contribute to social cohesion.
Advisor Nomphumelelo Sithole, representing the office of the eThekwini municipality mayor, highly praised the organization's work and the new facility. Sithole called Chinmaya Mission's public activities a 'masterclass' in humanitarian aid and noted that the celebration demonstrated the possibilities of organizational collaboration.
President of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha, Judge Ranjiv Nirgin, recalled that the organization was 'illuminated' when Swami Abhedananda arrived in South Africa and joined it 20 years ago. Nirgin congratulated the mission on these achievements, noting the unity prevailing within the mission.
During the celebration, as Hindus observe Navaratri (worship of Goddess Durga Mata), Nirgin also raised the issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in the country. He stated that it is unacceptable to worship the divine Mother while ignoring the fight against this evil in communities. He called for equality between daughters and sons, as well as respect for mothers, daughters, and daughters-in-law.
After the official part, guests toured the new medical center and residential block.
