New Meta VR Headset: Lightweight Device with 5K Display Hits Market

The new lightweight VR headset from Meta presents an elegant alternative to bulky headsets, offering immersion in entertainment, cloud gaming, and virtual workspaces for everyday users.

Although the virtual reality device market remains a relatively untapped segment in technology, the release of the Meta VR headset could change this situation. Meta is known for its experience in headset manufacturing, having released various Quest devices since 2022 following the rebranding of the Oculus Quest line.

Previous Meta Quest models were massive, fully immersive devices comparable to the Apple Vision Pro. However, the new VR headset features a thinner and more functional design, approaching the look of traditional glasses.

Despite still requiring a wired connection to an external battery for operation, almost all other characteristics have been optimized. The new Meta VR headset is five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3, which was introduced in 2023.

The device is equipped with an Infinite Display featuring a 5K resolution built on micro-OLED panels, providing exceptionally clear and detailed visuals. This allows users to enjoy a theater-level viewing experience in any setting, boasting visual clarity significantly superior to previous models. Meta positions this experience as an IMAX Enhanced certified device.

To enable this experience, Meta collaborates with several major streaming platforms, including Prime Video, YouTube, and ESPN for broadcasting sporting events. Although the initial set of services is limited, Meta plans to expand this list in the near future.

In terms of productivity, the headset can transform any flat surface into a full-fledged workstation equipped with a virtual keyboard and trackpad. For entertainment on the go, 75 games are already available via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

The new Meta VR headset will go on sale in the US in March for $1299, equivalent to approximately 21,500 rubles before import duties and taxes.
