KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education Guarantees Exam Protection Against Election Disruptions

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has announced the implementation of measures to protect students and teachers from potential disruptions that may arise due to local elections on November 4th.

Minister of Education (MEC) Sifo Khlumuka stated that the schedule for final examinations has been adjusted to ensure student safety: no exams are scheduled for the day of the election. Similar protective measures have also been applied to internal exams for students in grades 4 through 11, which take place from October 21st to November 14th.

Currently, 203,815 candidates are registered for the NSC 2026 exams, including 188,102 full-day and 15,713 part-time participants. This represents an increase of 7,916 people, or about 4% compared to last year, indicating a rise in the number of students reaching the final stages of their education.

In preparation for the increase in candidates, the department has launched an extensive student support program, which includes winter and spring classes across the province. The winter learning program, held from June to July, aimed to fully cover the curriculum and provide intensive preparation for students before the exams.

Over 31,156 trained observers will supervise the examination sessions in approximately 1,766 centers. Furthermore, a thorough inspection was conducted to guarantee adequate equipment for printing approximately 32 million individual test papers. Logistics will be managed through 13 storage points and 103 distribution centers.

During his address at the National Certificate 2026 readiness event, Department Head Nkosinathi Ngkobo noted that the police are on high alert to ensure the delivery of examination materials to centers without any hindrance. Ngkobo also warned that all students caught attempting cheating during the exam will be banned from taking exams for the next three consecutive sessions. Teachers or staff found violating examination rules will also be dismissed.

MPSC postpones three exams and re-evaluates 2025 papers amid protests

Amid unrest surrounding the examinations, MPSC made an important decision: three exams were postponed, and the commission decided to re-evaluate the answers of 2025 candidates.

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) announced the postponement of the State Service Main Examination 2026, which was scheduled for October 3. Additionally, the Maharashtra Civil Engineering Main Examination 2026 and the Maharashtra Group-B (Non-Gazetted) Main Examination were rescheduled. New dates for these tests will be announced by the commission later.

This decision was made during a period of ongoing dissatisfaction from applicants regarding the MPSC examination system. Students are raising concerns about the alleged leakage of materials in the narcotics inspector exam, as well as the conduct of the examinations by the commission.

MPSC reported that the request to postpone the State Service Main Examination 2026, originally set to begin on October 3, came from numerous students, parents, student organizations, and some respected elected representatives. Taking all these factors into account, the commission decided to postpone all three exams.

Furthermore, MPSC made a significant decision regarding the papers of the State Service Main Examination 2025: a re-evaluation of the answers will be conducted. The commission clarified that this followed objections raised by several student organizations and students themselves against the grading of the State Service Main Examination 2025. Consequently, the re-check is likely to cause delays in the examination process.

To analyze the current examination system, a high-level committee was formed under the chairmanship of senior official V. Radha. The committee held extensive discussions with various applicants and other stakeholders, and it is also studying best practices employed in different locations. According to the commission, the committee's recommendations for improving the examination system are expected to be presented soon.

The situation has also garnered attention from politicians. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thakre mentioned that his party had approached Governor Jishnu Deva Verma demanding the postponement of the exams, and this demand was granted. He also expressed hope that the governor would call for the resignation of the MPSC chairman.

As of now, MPSC has not published new dates for the three postponed exams. Moreover, the re-evaluation of the State Service Main Examination 2025 papers may also cause delays in this part of the process. Thus, applicants must await the next announcement from the commission.
