The story of a transgender female doctor from Telangana who faced family rejection and discrimination

Koyala Ruth John Paul, a resident of Telangana, inspires everyone striving to realize their dreams by demonstrating resilience in the face of any difficulty. Despite the early loss of her father and the necessity for her mother to provide for the family through hard labor, Ruth was always an excellent student and managed to complete medical school through perseverance.

However, after disclosing her transgender identity to her family, she had to face numerous problems. Even after obtaining her MBBS degree, many hospitals refused to hire her due to her transgender status. Nevertheless, she did not give up, achieving not only her place in the medical field but also approaching Telangana regarding employment and admission discrimination.

Ruth John Paul is originally from the Hammam area in Telangana. The early death of her father created many problems for her and her family, as the responsibility for the household fell on her mother, who earned a living through daily labor. Despite financial difficulties, Ruth continued her studies and performed well until the completion of the 12th grade. Due to her academic performance, she was granted free tuition for the 11th and 12th grades, as well as free preparation classes for NEET. Subsequently, she completed her MBBS at a private medical college in Hyderabad.

The most significant turning point in Ruth's life occurred at the age of twenty when she revealed the truth about her transgender identity to her family while in her third year of MBBS. She hoped for support, but instead, her family distanced themselves from her and even forbade her from returning home. However, she did not let this affect her studies and continued her education, achieving success.

When attempting to enroll in postgraduate medical courses, Ruth encountered another issue: there were no clear guidelines for admitting transgender candidates. Consequently, she approached the High Court of Telangana. Following a favorable court decision, the path opened for her to pursue postgraduate medical education. During her enrollment, she also raised the issue of methods for determining the category for transgender candidates. Ruth, who identifies as a woman, chose to challenge this issue rather than ignore it.

Ruth believes that transgender individuals should also have equal opportunities to advance based on their abilities and diligence. Her story demonstrates not only the achievement of completing medical education but also underscores the need to ensure equal opportunities in education and employment. Despite economic hardship, family opposition, and job search challenges, Ruth continued her journey in medicine. Obtaining a specialist degree in emergency medicine is a significant achievement in her long struggle.
