In honor of Senior Citizens Month, the Johannesburg Zoo invites the older generation to enjoy a month dedicated to wildlife, fresh air, and family time by offering free entry to visitors aged 60 and over throughout October.
This initiative aims to allow elderly residents to reconnect with nature and spend quality time with loved ones. Visitors can take advantage of this offer by presenting an identification document. Furthermore, families, nursing homes, and senior groups are encouraged to plan joint outings and enjoy this experience.
This offer is part of a monthly program of events aimed at celebrating the lives of seniors and creating unforgettable moments for different generations. On October 22, visitors can benefit from a reduced price of R22 per person as the Johannesburg Zoo celebrates its 122nd anniversary. Seniors aged 60 and over will continue to have free entry on this day.
As part of the program, on October 27, there will be a blanket and scarf collection drive under the #67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela initiative, starting at 9 am. Knitting enthusiasts are encouraged to donate both finished and purchased blankets and scarves for needy elderly people. Recipients of these donations will be seniors from homes in the Soweto, Lenasia, Eldorado Park, and Alexandria areas. Representatives from various Johannesburg city departments will also be present to demonstrate free and subsidized services for elderly residents and assist them in obtaining necessary support.
Individuals and companies wishing to donate baskets or treat seniors can contact the zoo. Additionally, the City Transport Department and Rea Vaya are collaborating with taxi associations to provide free transport to the zoo for senior citizens throughout October, helping to solve issues of transportation costs and accessibility. Visitors can tour the zoo using a shuttle that circulates within the grounds, facilitating visits to attractions such as the Big Five and the Amazonian Animals exhibit, which includes a freshwater aquarium walk.
The month will conclude with a Halloween celebration at the zoo on October 31, offering spooky surprises and entertainment for the whole family. The Johannesburg Zoo urges residents to mark these events in their calendars, prepare a picnic, and bring their grandparents to the month dedicated to celebrating the older generation. In a statement on Sunday, Jenny Mudli noted: 'October is dedicated to celebrating their lives, reconnecting, and creating wonderful memories together.'
