Microscopic Demodex Mites Inhabit Facial Skin and Are Active at Night

There are microscopic organisms on human skin that are invisible to the naked eye. These creatures, known as Demodex mites, live in hair follicles and around eyelashes. They are present on the skin of most adults, but usually do not cause any problems.

These mites are so small that a microscope is required for their detection. They feed on skin sebum and other substances accumulated in the hair follicles. They can be found on the face, nose, eyebrows, and around the eyelashes. Notably, they become more active at night.

At night, the mites leave the hair follicles to reproduce, after which they return to their places. It is important to understand that the mere presence of these mites on the skin is not a sign of any disease.

Demodex mites show increased activity at night compared to the daytime period. At night, they may leave the hair follicles and appear on the skin surface to reproduce before returning to the follicles. However, this does not mean that their nocturnal activity will necessarily lead to itching or irritation in all people; most people are unaware of the presence of these organisms on their skin because they are usually inconspicuous and harmless.

Problems can arise if the population of Demodex mites increases significantly. This condition is called demodex. Symptoms may include redness, itching, irritation, and the appearance of small rashes on the face. If the concentration of mites increases in the area of the eyelashes, it can cause swelling, itching, and the formation of white crusts at the base of the eyelashes, and in some cases, eyelash loss.

People with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of an increase in the number of these mites. However, it should be remembered that the appearance of a rash or itching on the face is not always related specifically to Demodex mites, as there are other potential causes.

Since Demodex mites are found on the skin of most people, there is no need to strive to completely eradicate them. To maintain skin health, it is recommended to cleanse the face with mild washing agents and remove makeup before going to bed. If persistent itching, redness, rash, as well as swelling or irritation of the eyelashes, is observed, it is necessary to consult a dermatologist or ophthalmologist. A specialist can examine and prescribe treatment as needed. It is extremely important to avoid using any medications or chemicals to eliminate these organisms without consulting a doctor.

The presence of Demodex mites on the skin is considered normal for most people who live without complications. The problem only arises when their number becomes excessive and begins to cause discomfort in the skin or eyelashes. Therefore, one should not worry just because they are present; in case of any persistent skin problems, it is best to consult a doctor.
