India Post plans drone delivery of letters and parcels on 110 routes in Himachal Pradesh

Mail delivery to the mountainous regions of Himachal Pradesh may become significantly easier with the introduction of drones. Letters and parcels will now be delivered by unmanned aerial vehicles to villages where previously staff had to travel over winding and difficult roads.

India Post has developed a plan to use drones for mail delivery across 110 routes in Himachal Pradesh. Notably, this service is currently operational on 36 of these routes.

Thanks to drones, which can fly directly in the air delivering mail from one post office to another, the time previously spent on long journeys through the state's hilly areas can be substantially reduced.

According to officials from the postal department, the goal of this service is to ensure faster delivery of mail and parcels to remote settlements, which will save time and increase delivery reliability compared to previous methods.

The first drone delivery of mail in Himachal took place on August 13, 2026. As part of this event, the national flag (Tiranga) was delivered by a drone from the main post office in Mandi to the branch in Rehardar.

The main information about this initiative was presented by Sanjay Singh, Chief Postmaster General of the Himachal Pradesh Postal Circle, during the celebration of World Post Day. He stated that mail is currently being delivered by drones on 36 routes, and work is underway to expand this service to 110 routes.

Drone delivery will facilitate not only the delivery of letters but also parcels, especially in areas where poor roads, mountain trails, and long distances pose challenges to traditional logistics.

This step by the postal department demonstrates the growing application of new technologies in the old postal system. If this service continues to function successfully, residents of mountainous areas will not have to wait as long for mail and parcels as before. However, the effectiveness of the service will depend on weather conditions, road conditions, and the operating conditions of the drones in different areas.
