Ekta Kapoor confirmed that 15 years after Vidya Balan's film 'The Dirty Picture' was released, work has started on its sequel, 'The Dirty Picture 2'. The producer announced that she has finally found a plot she wants to tell in this sequel.
During a conversation on Ranavir Illahandya's podcast, Kapoor noted that this project is one of the major films she is currently working on. She stated: 'I am shooting a very big film, 'The Dirty Picture 2'. I plan it for 15 years from now. This time, I think I have a story I want to tell.'
The original film 'The Dirty Picture', which was released in 2011, told a story inspired by the life of South Indian actress Silk Smitha, and featured Vidya Balan, Nasiruddin Shah, Imran Hashmi, and Tusher Kapoor.
Recalling the first film, Kapoor emphasized that she never viewed Silk as a victim. Instead, she saw her as a woman who embraced and celebrated her sexuality despite societal condemnation. Kapoor explained: 'The Dirty Picture was about Silk Smitha. She was a woman who was judged for her sexuality. Sexuality is your own choice. I never saw her as a victim. I saw her as a woman who celebrates her sexuality, and the film was a great success.'
She added that the sequel will be based on the story of a woman similar to Silk Smitha, but she did not reveal which specific woman would be featured, hinting that a major announcement would follow later.
Currently, Kapoor is keeping most information about 'The Dirty Picture 2' confidential. The producer has not disclosed details regarding the actors, director, release date, or the identity of the woman whose story the sequel will cover. The film has not been officially announced through her social media yet.
It is worth noting that the original film was released in theaters on December 2, 2011, and was dedicated to the life of Silk Smitha, who acted in over 450 films during her 18-year career. At the age of 35, she died by suicide at her home in Chennai.
