Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting with the Indian men's cricket team, which won the gold medal at the recent 2026 Asian Games by defeating Pakistan. This meeting will take place on October 15th when the President visits his home at 4:30 PM to celebrate their success.
The team, led by Shreyas Iyer, has won the Asian Games title twice in a row, defeating Pakistan in the final match. The Prime Minister had previously offered his congratulations via social media, but will now personally encourage the athletes.
The Indian team's participation in the Asian Games was brilliant, as they maintained dominance over their opponents throughout all stages of the playoffs. In the semi-final match against Sri Lanka on October 1st, India initially scored 169/7 runs in 20 overs, thanks to an impressive innings from Ishan Kishan with 80 not out and 38 runs from Vaibha Suryawanshi. Sri Lanka could not withstand the Indian bowlers and was reduced to 45 runs, allowing India to secure a convincing victory by 124 runs, thanks to contributions from Akshar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, and Abhishek Sharma, who each took two wickets.
In the final match on October 3rd against Pakistan, India initially scored a substantial total of 211/6. Abhishek Sharma demonstrated a powerful performance, scoring 61 runs off 28 balls, while Tilak Verma (51 not out) and Shivam Dube (27) also played brightly. Although Hasan Nawaz from Pakistan fought hard and scored 96 runs in the chase, the Indian bowlers applied pressure and restricted Pakistan to 192/6, securing a 19-run victory and gold for India.
In addition to the cricketers, Prime Minister Modi will also meet other athletes who brought honor to the country by winning gold medals in other sports at the Asian Games. Overall, India won 85 medals at the Asian Games in Ichinago, including 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze, ranking fourth in the overall medal tally.
