Young Man from USA Built Online Resale Business While India's Reselling Market Grows

A sixteen-year-old resident of America has demonstrated impressive results in business despite his age. While children in India at this age are focused on studying, this young man started online reselling, investing only 48,400 rupees. He purchased goods from Walmart and sold them through Amazon.

According to a Business Insider report, his sales reached about $10,000 in the first month (approximately 9.7 lakh rupees). Later, his monthly turnover grew to over $25,000 (about 24 lakh rupees).

This young man's story illustrates the growing online resale sector, where entrepreneurs purchase goods at low prices and sell them on e-commerce platforms for a higher cost. This model has become popular as more people view online sales as a way to earn extra income or start their own business.

Online reselling begins with buying goods at a low price. Products are acquired cheaply and then sold for more through e-commerce platforms. Sellers buy goods from retail stores, wholesale suppliers, during sales, or from other suppliers, and then list them online. One such method is retail arbitrage, where a seller buys discounted goods in stores or online platforms and sells them at a higher price on platforms like Amazon.

The assortment can include daily necessities, personal hygiene products, clothing, toys, and electronics. Sellers can handle storage, packaging, and shipping themselves, or use fulfillment services from e-commerce platforms. Although these services simplify the delivery process, associated fees must be considered as business expenses.

Turning to the situation in India, it is noted that along with the growth of e-commerce, opportunities for online reselling are also increasing. According to Amazon India, by September 2026, the number of sellers on its marketplace exceeded 2 million. Over the last year, more than three hundred thousand new sellers have joined.

Amazon India also reports that over 28,000 sellers use the Product Opportunity Explorer tool. This tool helps sellers assess customer demand, study purchasing trends, and analyze competition before investing money in purchasing goods.

Simultaneously, the market for used goods reselling is growing. According to a PayNXT360 report, the Indian reselling market is projected to reach $5.91 billion by 2026, demonstrating an annual growth rate of 11.7%. This segment includes the resale of used items and differs from the retail sale of new products.

Online reselling can be a way to start a business in e-commerce, but simply buying a product at a low price does not guarantee profit. Sellers must account for platform commissions, shipping costs, storage, advertising, returns, and unsold inventory. It is important to understand that high sales volume does not always mean high profit. A product may sell quickly, but after deducting all expenses, the net revenue may be low. Furthermore, purchasing a large quantity of goods without assessing customer demand can lead to unsold inventory.

For those who want to start their own venture, reselling offers a way to enter e-commerce without the need to manufacture one's own products. Nevertheless, for long-term business operation, it is critical to understand market demand, manage inventory effectively, and control costs. Thus, the main task in online reselling is not just buying cheap goods and selling them expensively, but also determining the actual profit after covering all costs.
