The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) jointly with Iran held the second meeting of the joint committee, where issues of transport simplification and reduction of transit barriers were discussed. This was reported by the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).
Participants reviewed aspects such as border crossing conditions, registration of route cards, fuel costs, and ways to reduce expenses for international freight carriers. Special attention was paid to the digitalization of railway connections along the 'North-South' route, and the issue of documentation during transit through Russia was also discussed.
Iran expressed interest in developing its border infrastructure and increasing its capacity. One area of cooperation identified is the use of electronic documents.
It is planned that the future information document will combine information on transport contracts, their compliance with national legislation, and possibilities for electronic document management.
The next meeting of this committee is scheduled for 2027 under the chairmanship of the EEC. The practical value of such decisions will depend on their application on the route. Even with existing infrastructure, carriers incur costs related to waiting for registration and return journeys. However, optimizing processes and finding backhaul cargo allows transportation to become more economical without changing the distance.
The EAEU is an international economic union that has been operating since January 1, 2015. Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan are members of the Union. Uzbekistan obtained observer status in the EAEU in 2020, as did Cuba and Iran.
