Cricketer Abhimanyu Ishwarán Awaits Chance in Indian Team After Years of Waiting

Abhimanyu Ishwarán, a left-handed batsman from Bengal, continues to await the opportunity to debut for the Indian national team outside of domestic championships, despite consistent performances in club cricket. He is 31 years old and maintains his dream of wearing the Indian Test jersey.

Although he has been selected for the squad multiple times, he has not managed to secure a spot in the starting lineup. Currently, his focus is on improving his game and helping the Bengal team win the Ranji trophy.

In 2024, Abhimanyu Ishwarán was included in the Indian team for the home series against England, and subsequently for the tour of Australia, but his Test debut never materialized. He has not lost hope of playing for India, stating: 'Playing for India and winning matches for it has always been my dream. It was my goal from day one and will remain in my heart.'

Ishwarán understands that selection is beyond his control; he can only control his preparation and performance on the field. This is why he strives to contribute his maximum effort in every match, regardless of whether he plays for Bengal or another team. He emphasized that he achieves his best results when fully focused on the game and considers constantly worrying about selection useless. He expresses hope that consistent good performances will eventually pay off.

Ishwarán is known as a patient left-handed batsman. He handles the new ball skillfully, waits for weak deliveries, and is capable of playing long innings. Nevertheless, due to changes in cricket, he aims to expand his scoring options. In his view, there is no single way to score runs in first-class cricket; a batsman must develop a strategy depending on the pitch, opposing players, and match conditions.

He mentioned that he is working on new shots to be able to score quickly under various conditions. According to him, there is always room for improvement in cricket, and players must constantly work on their game.

Beyond personal goals, Abhimanyu Ishwarán carries the responsibility of leading the Bengal team. In recent years, the team has come close to the Ranji title but has been disappointed in crucial matches. In the 2019-20 final, Bengal was defeated by Saurashtra, utilizing the advantage of the first half of the match. Three seasons later, the teams met again in the final, but Saurashtra won by nine wickets. Last season, Bengal's campaign ended in the semi-finals, where they were beaten by Jammu and Kashmir by six wickets.

In that match, Bengal scored 328 runs in the first innings, with Sudip Garam playing a vital innings of 146 runs, while Jammu and Kashmir scored only 302 runs. Despite this, Bengal could only manage 99 runs in the second innings, allowing the opponent to set a target of 126 runs for victory.

When asked what needed to change in the team, Ishwarán admitted that he did not have a simple answer. However, he noted that better performance is required in crucial playoff moments. The team must take responsibility under pressure and capitalize on opportunities that arise.

Recently, Abhimanyu Ishwarán showed valuable performances while representing East Zone in the Dilip Trophy tournament. In the semi-final against Central Zone, he scored 69 runs and helped the team win by four wickets. In the final against South Zone, he scored 72 runs off 86 balls. Thanks to his innings, East Zone managed to score 708 runs in the first innings. These performances once again demonstrated his value in red-ball cricket. Now, as captain of Bengal, he needs to show similar form in the Ranji tournament.

Bengal possesses experienced fast bowlers such as Mohammed Shami, Akash Dip, and Mukesh Kumar. The return of Akash Dip is expected to add extra strength to the team. Ishwarán noted that captaining such players is valuable experience, as they have consistently performed well for various teams.

Bengal began its Ranji season by playing against Delhi in Kalyani. This season, players face the challenge of balancing red-ball cricket with limited-format competitions. Abhimanyu Ishwarán believes that professional athletes should adapt to format changes as soon as possible.
