New Zealand announces ODI squad for matches against India; one key player returns

New Zealand has announced the squads for its five-match ODI series against India, which begins on November 4th. The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) organization presented the player lists, featuring athletes such as Finn Allen, Loki Ferguson, Rachin Ravindra, and Tim Seifert. However, it should be noted that these four players will not be available for the entire series.

NZC formed two separate squads for the five ODIs, meaning there will be changes in the team composition throughout the series. The reason for this decision is also preparation for the upcoming two-match Test series, which will start shortly after the conclusion of the ODI tournament. The New Zealand team management aims to prepare some players for the Test matches in advance by withdrawing them from the ODI squad.

A squad of 14 players was selected for the first three ODIs. In addition to captain Michael Santner, this squad included Michael Bresshaw, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Df, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, and Will Young.

Rachin Ravindra, who previously could not participate in the T20 International series against India due to a shoulder injury, will now return to the ODI squad and can play in the first three matches. He is expected to contribute in both batting and bowling. For the fourth and fifth ODIs, NZC chose a different team, which will feature Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, known for their aggressive style in T20. Allen and Loki Ferguson played for New Zealand in the last ODI of 2023, and Seifert last played in 50 overs in the home series against Pakistan about eighteen months ago.

The team selected for the last two matches also includes Santner, Bresshaw, Chapman, Jacob Df, Blair Tickner, and Will Young. Additionally, Christian Clark, Matt Fisher, Mitch Heap, and Nick Kelly were included, giving the team an opportunity to test the depth of its squad in the final two ODIs.

The series between India and New Zealand extends beyond just bilateral encounters, as both teams will also consider preparations for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2027, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Consequently, defining player roles and forming a strong squad is extremely important for the team management.

New Zealand coach Rob Walter noted that playing at home against such a strong team as India presents a great opportunity. He emphasized that with the World Cup being about a year away, this series will be very significant for preparation. According to Walter, including seven additional players in the squad for the last two ODIs is aimed at assessing the depth of the team to understand how these players perform against a world-class team and how many options are available for the major tournament.

Three players recovering from injuries—Jacari Foulkes (iliopsoas muscle), Will O'Rourke (calf), and Ben Sears (ankle)—were not included in the selection list for the ODI series against India.

Mark Chapman and Jack Faulkner ruled out of T20 series against India due to injuries

Before the start of the five-match T20 International Championship series between India and New Zealand, the New Zealand team had to face two serious problems. Due to injuries, Mark Chapman and Jack Faulkner will be unable to participate in the entire series. In their place, all-rounder Josh Clark and fast bowler Blair Tickner have been included in the squad.

Chapman was diagnosed with a hamstring injury during a T20 league game in Europe last month, which will prevent him from participating in the upcoming T20 series against India. His next goal is to return to the squad for the ODI matches against India. As for Faulkner, he is struggling with hip flexor issues, and his return date to the field has not yet been determined.

New Zealand's head coach, Rob Walters, expressed regret over the injuries to both players. He noted that he felt sorry for Mark and Jack and wished them a speedy recovery. At the same time, Walters expressed confidence in the experience of Clark and Tickner, noting that their inclusion in the team is a positive development. He also expressed hope that both players would be happy for the opportunity to play in this exciting T20 series.

The series between India and New Zealand will begin on October 22nd in Christchurch. Both teams previously met in the final of the Men's T20 World Cup earlier this year, where India won convincingly by a score of 96 runs.

The New Zealand squad, consisting of 16 players, includes Mitchell Santner (captain), Finn Allen, Michael Bresshaw, Josh Clark, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Loki Ferguson, Matt Henry, Bevan Jabs, Kyle Jamieson, Edmil Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Timifert, Nathan Smith, and Blair Tickner.

The schedule for the India-New Zealand T20 series is as follows: the first T20 will take place on October 22nd in Christchurch; the second T20 on October 24th in Christchurch; the third T20 on October 27th in Wellington; the fourth T20 on October 30th in Auckland; and the fifth T20 is scheduled for November 1st in Hamilton.

India's squad announcement for matches against New Zealand expected this week

Tensions have risen surrounding the Indian cricket team's tour to New Zealand. The Indian team is scheduled to travel to New Zealand at the end of this month for a lengthy tournament featuring five T20 matches, five ODI matches, and two Test matches.

The composition of the Indian team is expected to be announced this week. Although many players may feature in the squad, there is important news regarding the selection process that will take place this time.

According to media reports, a meeting of the senior men's selection committee of the BCCI is scheduled for this week, between October 5th and 11th. Notably, the term of Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar expired on October 4th, but the council has not yet announced his successor.

Until a new selector is appointed, the committee will operate with four members. It is anticipated that former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha may lead the first such meeting. Although it is unclear whether this arrangement is temporary or permanent, there are rumors that the full squads for all formats for the New Zealand tour will be announced this week.

Cricket circles are actively discussing which strong players will return to the team and who will get a chance before the new squad is released. Captain Shubman Gill indicated after the recent ODI series against West India that he wants all key players to be available for the upcoming matches.

Thus, the inclusion of veterans in the limited-overs formats for the New Zealand tour is considered inevitable. The two Test matches in New Zealand are of great importance for maintaining hopes for the 2027 WTC World Cup.

It is also suggested that fast bowler Mukesh Kumar from Bengal, who made a splash with his lethal performance in Jammu and Kashmir during the Iran Cup, might return to the Test squad. Mukesh Kumar helped the team win the Iran Cup final while playing for Rest of India, taking 6 wickets. Additionally, Akash Dip may also secure a spot in the team for the matches.

Michael Breswell declines central contract for BBL play, remains available for New Zealand squad

Experienced all-rounder from New Zealand, Michael Breswell, has decided to step away from the central contract for the 2026-27 season. However, Breswell is not completely distancing himself from the New Zealand team; he will remain available on a casual playing contract and participate in the upcoming white-ball series against India.

This move was made by Michael Breswell to participate in the Australian domestic T20 league, the Big Bash League (BBL). New Zealand cricket supported his decision. The 35-year-old Breswell has already played 105 international matches for New Zealand.

Despite leaving the central contract, Michael Breswell emphasized that his commitment to New Zealand remains unchanged. He is ready to participate in the forthcoming white-ball series against India.

Michael Breswell stated that the support from New Zealand cricket is very important to him at this stage of his career. He noted that the opportunity to play as a white-ball player was a chance he found difficult to pass up. He confirmed his full dedication to the 'Black Caps' and expressed enthusiasm about participating in the upcoming series against India and future white-ball matches.

Nick Kelly, a left-handed batter, has been included in place of Michael Breswell in the central contract list. The 33-year-old Kelly received his first full contract in his career. He was awarded recognition for consistently outstanding performance in domestic competitions over the last few seasons.

New Zealand coach Rob Walter highly praised Nick Kelly. Walter noted that Kelly is among the best players in domestic competitions over many seasons and earned this contract through his perseverance. He also added that sometimes a later emergence in international cricket can be beneficial for a player, as they better understand their game and can rely on themselves under pressure.

Michael Breswell is not the first New Zealand player to opt out of a central contract to play in a foreign league. Last month, Mark Chapman also opted for a casual playing contract for the 2026-27 season. Finn Allen, Loki Ferguson, Adam Milne, and Tim Seifert have previously utilized this system. This indicates that New Zealand players are now prioritizing the opportunity to play in overseas domestic leagues alongside international cricket.

The list of New Zealand players included in the central contract comprises: Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Jack Foulkes, Mitchell Hayes, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Nick Kelly, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Will O'Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, and Will Young.
