Legal issues for Shahrukh and Ajay Devgn regarding Tukaram Mundhe's actions

The problems for famous Bollywood actors related to imitation advertisements for prohibited tobacco products are not decreasing. After the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent notifications, major actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff submitted their responses.

Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe emphasized that the law is the same for everyone and no one will be exempt from responsibility. Nevertheless, adhering to the principles of natural justice, the actors will be given another opportunity for a hearing or a final decision before stricter legal measures are taken.

Discussing the situation with media representatives during the 'India Today Conclave 2026' in Mumbai, Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe stated that the department had received responses from the respective artists. He clarified that within the FDA procedure, these actors will be given one more chance to present their position or undergo a hearing before further steps are taken. The department is operating within its legal authority, and subsequent actions will be determined according to established legal frameworks.

The Commissioner particularly stressed that stars and celebrities must exercise extreme caution when promoting any products. Referring to Section 24 of the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 and the Advertising Rules of 2018, he stated that the burden of responsibility lies with the sponsor, who is obliged to ensure that the advertised product complies with the law. Regardless of whether it is expressed through words, gestures, or behavior, the rules apply equally to all.

Tukaram Mundhe clearly warned that anyone who violates the law must be held accountable. The FDA will take impartial action in case of any violation, regardless of how high the profile of the person or business is. He also explained that these strict advertising rules do not only apply to prohibited products but extend to all food products sold in the market.

Speaking at the conference, Mundhe also urged ordinary consumers to remain aware of misleading advertising. He advised people to carefully read and understand all the fine and large print information on food packaging. Only when consumers become aware themselves and are not influenced by deceptive claims in advertising can such phenomena be completely stopped.
