Stormers defeat Sharks in URC derby with a score of 39-22

The Stormers team demonstrated impressive play in the United Rugby Championship (URC) derby, securing a convincing 39-22 victory over the Sharks on Saturday afternoon in Cape Town. The home side dominated from the start of the match, utilizing powerful mauls and scrums to avenge two losses suffered against the Durbanites last season.

The game was a special event for DHL Stadium, as over 40,000 spectators were present, welcoming the Stormers' new 'Men in Black'-inspired kit, which the team had not worn since 1999. Thanks to this win, which brought bonus points, the Stormers interrupted the Sharks' two-match unbeaten streak and climbed higher in the league table.

Winger Seabelo Senatla opened the scoring just six minutes into the game, scoring the first try from a corner and celebrating with a bicycle kick, reminiscent of the legendary Stormers and Springbok winger Breyton Paulse. This player, representing the 2026 class, debuted in the black jersey.

Captain Bok Siya Kolisi and tighthead Wilco Louw also returned during the match, and injured utility back Cheslin Kolbe made an appearance. Kolbe briefly came on before the start, while Kolisi displayed skill along the sideline during the game.

Dominance in Scrums and Mauls

Wilco Louw was one of the standout figures of the match, as his battle in the scrum against Ox Nché was entirely in favor of his new team. Together with loosehead Ntuthuko Mchunu and hooker André-Hugo Venter, the Stormers heavily pressured the Sharks' front line. Nché and teammate Bok Thomas du Toit struggled with the powerful scrum, although Du Toit managed to win a defensive scrum for his team.

The home team also excelled in the mauls, gaining meters on every launch and scoring three tries as a result. The Sharks failed to find effective solutions, while hookers André-Hugo Venter and JJ Kotzé, along with eight Hacjivah Dayimani, scored brilliant tries following powerful mauls.

Dayimani scored his second five-pointer in the second half after the scrum pushed the Sharks over their own goal line, supported by Mchunu and Louw. The Stormers secured their bonus point just a minute into the second half when winger Leolin Zas scored a try. At that moment, the Sharks were playing with 13 men after yellow cards issued to Matt Romao for a dangerous tackle on Jonathan Roche and Tshituka for stopping a maul.

The Sharks regained a full complement of players and managed to advance towards the goal line, scoring a try from a maul, which was their second in the match, slightly livening up the game. Head coach JP Pietersen decided to bring on six substitutes simultaneously, and this seemed to work, as the Sharks scored another excellent try, scored by Phepsi Buthelezi.

Impact of Substitutions and Match Conclusion

This try occurred at a time when the Stormers were playing somewhat relaxed and experienced a defensive dip. However, when rugby director John Dobson introduced the substitutes, they injected fresh energy into the team. The try scored by substitute hooker JJ Kotzé from a maul effectively decided the outcome of the game while the Sharks tried to catch up.

Dayimani, who also played outstandingly, nearly completed a hat-trick in the final 10 minutes after a brilliant play by the home team, delighting the spectators. Nevertheless, before he could score, fullback Damian Willemse dropped the ball. Despite it being a brilliant first home performance for the Cape Town side, they acknowledged that they could have scored more points. Nonetheless, they can use this exciting display in upcoming matches.

Score at the end of the match: Stormers 39 (13): Tries: Seabelo Senatla, Hacjivah Dayimani (2), André-Hugo Venter, Leolin Zas, JJ Kotzé. Conversions: Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (3). Penalties: Mngomezulu. Sharks (8): Tries: Manu Tshituka, Matt Romao, Phepsi Buthelezi. Conversions: Gianni Lombard (2). Penalties: Lombard.

Sharks and Bulls prepare for URC matches against Stormers and Lions

The Sharks team, captained by Andre Esterhuizen, is expected to show its influence after returning from the Springboks squad in the upcoming coastal derby against the Stormers on Saturday. Overall, the Sharks and Lions have an advantage heading into the first round of the United Rugby Championship (URC) derby against the Stormers and Bulls, respectively.

The Durban-based team, which has not lost two consecutive matches, ranks first in the URC table thanks to two victories with bonuses at Kings Park. The return of players from the Springboks has boosted their confidence, and they are now aiming for a third consecutive win in the tournament by defeating the Stormers.

JP Pietersen's team is the league leader with 10 points after a 26-20 victory over Leinster. However, they must confirm their home form in a tense away match at the DHL Stadium on Saturday at 4:00 PM.

Sharks aim to strengthen dominance over Stormers

It appears that the return of players from the Boks was timely: captain Andre Esterhuizen, wingers Edwil van der Merwe and Ethan Hooker, added valuable experience to the attacking line, while prop Thomas du Toit performed brilliantly in the scrum against Leinster, earning crucial penalties. In the reserves, left-winger Ox Nche and lock Eben Etzebeth shone.

The Stormers will be closely watching their opponents, especially after two previous games that did not go their way. They intend to rectify the situation against the Sharks and will have a good opportunity to do so in their famous 'Men in Black' kit in Cape Town.

Stormers fans, affectionately known as the Stormers Faithful, are anticipating this homecoming. After a 17-13 defeat to Edinburgh, the team desperately wants to return to winning ways following a strong start against Connacht in the first match. Rugby Director John Dobson and his assistants will conduct a full week of training, and the return of Springboks players may add the necessary depth and experience for this important clash.

Lions bring momentum to Loftus

In Loftus, the Bulls are in a difficult position ahead of the Jukskei derby against the Lions on Saturday afternoon (match at 1:30 PM). Although they are returning home after an inconsistent two-week overseas tour, the visitors are in excellent form after two confident home wins, which has allowed them to secure third place in the URC table.

The Pretoria-based team faces injury concerns before the game after a 26-22 loss to Munster, and head coach Johan Ackermann hopes this will not significantly disrupt his team's performance. Meanwhile, the Lions are gaining momentum and aim to surpass the hosts early in the season to maintain their pace.

However, for Ackermann and his colleague Ivan van Rooyen, the team composition and the availability of Springboks players will be crucial in trying to find the right balance to gain an advantage on Saturday afternoon. Jeanandre Rudolph made a run to the try line, helping the Bulls stay in the fight.

The Lions integrated their Boks players into the squad through the bench in the 35-19 victory over the Ospreys last week, but Van Rooyen intends to bring scrum-half Morne van den Berg and fullback Juan Horne back into the starting five for this battle. Ackermann will have to decide where to fit his international players without disrupting the team's cohesion. They fought hard throughout the match against Munster, but minor errors disrupted their rhythm.

If injuries exclude captain Marcel Coetzee and versatile backup Stravinho Jacobs from playing, Boks player Marco van Staden might play at flanker, and Handrie Pollard could potentially take the number 12 spot next to flyhalf Kurwin Bosch, who started his career well with the Bulls. Ackermann is also interested in bringing forwards Johan Grobbelaar and Jan-Hendrik Vessels back into the game for this contest.

Stormers demand more decisiveness ahead of Edinburgh match in URC

Stormers captain Ruan Nel and his teammates intend to improve their efficiency during the clash with Edinburgh on Friday evening, as part of the second round of the United Rugby Championship (URC).

The Stormers team will strive for a more decisive style of play when meeting Edinburgh at Hive Stadium on Friday. The goal is another URC victory, which will bring bonus points. After defeating Connacht in the opening match of the campaign, the team plans to continue playing with improved performance, aiming to maintain an unbeaten streak.

However, the game takes place at a stadium where they have not previously won in the URC, foreshadowing a tense match. Last Friday in Galway, Stormers defeated the hosts 29-15, but a large number of missed attacking opportunities almost cost them the win. Therefore, in Edinburgh, the team will focus on converting all scoring chances when they are within reach.

This will be critically important if the South African team wants to secure its first victory over the hosts at the well-known difficult Hive Stadium. They will have to face not only the 15 players of the Scottish club but also a highly motivated home crowd.

Nevertheless, Stormers is an experienced team, and the return of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi should inspire the players even more. Young player Yakin Ahmed, who plays winger, is also ready to activate the guests' attack. In the opening match in Galway, the defensive line was forced to give way to the forwards.

Rugby Director John Dobson noted: 'We know that Edinburgh is a difficult place to play, and we have some experience, including Siya, Ntuthuko (Mchunu) and Stefan (Ungerer), as well as Yakin Ahmed and Vandile Mlaba, who are very interesting young players.' He added: 'All 23 players will need to make great efforts to achieve results before we return to Cape Town for the decisive period of our season.'

After their first victory over Ulster last week, Edinburgh will be determined to maintain their winning streak against Stormers, but head coach Sean Everitt is aware of this challenge. They have more than 15 players on the injury list, but the return home will give the team strength.

Sean Everitt stated: 'We are incredibly happy to return to play in front of our fans; it feels like a long time since we had competitive rugby at home, and we, as a squad and staff, cannot wait to get on the field.' He continued: 'We know that Stormers present a different challenge, with the physical strength and directness of their forwards, as well as strong kicking play from their backline, but this is a challenge we are ready to face openly.'
