The KwaZulu-Natal provincial police have announced a multi-agency security operation covering traffic management, stadium access, and public order ahead of the MTN8 final, which will take place at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, October 10th, with full stands expected.
Law enforcement agencies assured football club fans that all necessary security measures have been taken in connection with the match between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
In an official statement, KZN police representative Colonel Robert Netsiunda reported that the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS), in collaboration with Durban metropolitan police, the traffic department, and private security companies, has activated a comprehensive security plan for the match.
Netsiunda specified that this operation includes organizing transport movement, ensuring safety at the stadium and in fan zones, as well as maintaining public order before, during, and after the game on October 10th.
The statement emphasized that 'PROVJOINTS KwaZulu-Natal wishes to assure football lovers that the city of Durban and surrounding areas are safe, and that the match will take place in a secure and protected environment.'
These assurances came after sporadic violent protests occurred in Durban's central business district on Thursday afternoon. The police reported that the province remained relatively calm otherwise, and officers will maintain a high visibility presence to prevent criminal activity during the event.
Netsiunda also issued a warning against spreading misleading messages on social media that allegedly aim to create panic and confusion regarding the final's staging. He confirmed that security measures remain in effect and warned that anyone attempting to violate security protocols or endanger spectators, officials, players, and other interested parties will be held accountable.
Fans were advised to arrive at the stadium early to avoid traffic congestion and last-minute rushing upon entry. Furthermore, the police reminded fans that weapons, including firearms and knives, as well as bottles, are prohibited inside the stadium.
Moses Mabhida Stadium and its vicinity have been declared no-fly zones, meaning unauthorized drones will not be permitted. Authorities stated that the security operation will continue before, during, and after this highly anticipated confrontation.
