Volunteers collected 18 tons of plastic waste on Mumbai beach, launching a recycling cycle

The Mumbai ocean suffers from plastic pollution, and the number of places for its disposal is decreasing. Every year, about 5 million kilograms of plastic enters the Arabian Sea from Mumbai, with most of this waste remaining there.

Recently, a group of over 1500 volunteers conducted a cleanup on one of the shores, resulting in the removal of 18,000 kg of marine plastic from the sand. However, the story did not end after the bags were filled. The team tracked the path of this waste to a recycling facility, where the trash was cleaned, sorted, and turned into new items.

Ultimately, this recycled material was used to create benches for children who need them in classrooms. Thus, the entire process—from waste to bench and child—was fully traced. This initiative is called 'Civil Consciousness Revolution' by The Better India, and its activities extend beyond beaches.
