In September, the number of Pix keys registered with the Central Bank (BC) surpassed the one billion mark for the first time. According to data released by the monetary authority, the country ended the month with 1.008 billion registered keys, an increase from the 998 million registered in August.
This volume indicates an approximate growth of 80 million keys since the end of 2025, a period when there were about 920 million registrations. The BC's statistics are based on the stock of keys registered on the last day of each month in the Directory of Transactional Account Identifiers (DICT), a system managed by the monetary authority itself.
Analyzing the total for September, it was found that 956.7 million keys were associated with individuals, while 51.2 million belonged to legal entities.
Interpretation of the number of keys
It is important to note that reaching one billion keys requires careful interpretation, as this number does not directly reflect how many Brazilian citizens use Pix. The same individual has the possibility of registering multiple keys; the BC reports that individuals can register up to five keys per account, and legal entities can register up to twenty.
Additionally, a specific key can only be linked to a single account. Furthermore, it is not mandatory to have a Pix key to use the system; the user can make or receive payments by providing the bank account details, although the key simplifies the procedure.
The most recent data provided by the BC shows that more than 170 million individuals have already made a Pix transaction, which is equivalent to approximately 80% of the population. The monetary authority also accounts for billions of operations performed by the system monthly.
Therefore, the increase in the number of keys occurs within a system that is already deeply integrated into daily financial activities in the country. The BC maintains a monthly updated statistics database containing information on keys, users, accounts, transactions, and participating institutions.
