US Imposes New Sanctions on Iran's 'Shadow Fleet'

The United States of America introduced new sanctions on Thursday targeting what it termed the 'remnants of Iran's shadow fleet,' which consists of oil tankers. This move is another effort to put pressure on Tehran.

According to a statement from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the sanctions affect dozens of companies, vessels, and individuals. The Treasury stated that this measure 'effectively neutralizes the vast majority of Iran's remaining shadow fleet network.'

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the goal of these measures is to deprive Tehran of the funds needed for 'conducting war in the region.'

The sanctions cover 17 vessels that reportedly transported millions of barrels of Iranian crude oil and petrochemical products to markets in South and East Asia. Furthermore, the Treasury has sanctioned the owning companies of these ships, accusing them of activities within Iran's petrochemical sector.
