University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella Notes Significant Contribution of Indian Students to Campus

Suresh Garimella, President of the University of Arizona, stated that students of Indian origin make an exceptional contribution to the campus activities. Earlier this year, Dr. Garimella was appointed to a position on the newly established scientific advisory committee of the U.S. Department of Energy.

Garimella is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and focuses on building a strong and cohesive leadership team, as well as ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the institution. He consistently advocates for educational accessibility and affordable tuition for students.

Responding to questions about the challenges of leading higher education, Garimella noted that the public higher education system is rapidly changing. Universities face the need to prepare students for constantly evolving career paths, accelerate research to solve pressing societal problems, and demonstrate their value to the communities they serve. Achieving these goals requires both disciplined decision-making and the ability to unite people around a common objective.

At the University of Arizona, this has meant making difficult decisions with a constant focus on the future. The financial foundation has been strengthened, more attention has been paid to priorities, and the university has been positioned to leverage its significant strengths. Garimella believes that the essence of leadership lies in creating conditions for talented people to succeed.

He discussed the implementation of a new admissions strategy that opens up numerous pathways into the university while investing in academic development and wellness programs so that students can graduate in four years with minimal debt and secure good career opportunities. This commitment includes providing free counseling services, thereby removing a financial barrier to receiving assistance.

Furthermore, the university strives to prepare students for life in an increasingly interconnected world. An example is the expansion of the study abroad program, made possible by a generous donation of $20 million from the Garcia Family Foundation. These funds will allow international students to gain international experience that might otherwise be unavailable to them, thus broadening their horizons and better preparing them for leadership in the global economy.

Garimella also shared his experience as a journalist at The Economic Times for over 25 years, where he first worked in the ET newsroom in Calcutta and later as a contributor to the ET Magazine on Sundays in Delhi. He primarily writes about immigration policy issues and people of Indian descent. He also covers topics such as entrepreneurs in the food and beverage sectors, crafts, and education. Additionally, he is a 2019 Jefferson Fellow from the Center for East and West in Hawaii.
