The British health science company Bio-Synergy plans to achieve sales of between £3 and £5 million within its first year of operation in the Indian market. The company aims to capitalize on the growing consumer interest in preventative health and personalized wellness through its DNA and epigenetics testing kit.
The DNA + Epigenetics Kit was launched by the company in Mumbai on Thursday in partnership with Kynora Life Sciences LLP, which is the company's exclusive partner in India and is based in Ahmedabad. The kit is expected to be available to a wider Indian audience by the end of October, offered in price ranges from 25,000 to 85,000 Indian rupees.
Bio-Synergy founder, Daniel Hermann, told Business Standard that the company's goal is to achieve sales within three to five million pounds in the first year. He clarified that the product combines genetic and epigenetic analysis, providing consumers with insights into their lifestyle and biology, as well as personalized recommendations.
Hermann noted that the technology was developed in-house by the company and is not an off-the-shelf testing solution. The test analyzes approximately 900,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), allowing for over 150 reports across more than 20 categories. Furthermore, epigenetic markers are used to assess the impact of lifestyle factors on gene expression.
A key differentiator, according to Hermann, is the Blocentric Lifestyle AI Sports Nutrition Expert (Blaze) feature in the company's app. This tool is designed to interpret test results and provide personalized advice on diet, exercise, and lifestyle. Hermann emphasized that the company's approach is aimed at closing the loop between test results, data, and recommended interventions, such as suggesting Vitamin D supplementation if epigenetically beneficial.
Unlike traditional genetic tests, which primarily determine a person's genetic makeup, the company positions its product around the interaction between genetic predisposition and lifestyle. Hermann stated that the test focuses on areas that can potentially be improved through diet and lifestyle, rather than conditions like cancer. The company also emphasizes that the product is not diagnostic.
Kynora described the product as non-medical, positioning the test as a source of information regarding potential risks and lifestyle-related factors, rather than a clinical diagnosis. Bio-Synergy reported that samples and testing for the product sold in India will be conducted locally. Hermann explained that this decision is partly due to data security concerns, as the consumer owns the data, which is stored anonymously on the user's phone and deleted upon app removal. He also excluded licensing or transferring consumer data to pharmaceutical companies.
Testing will be conducted in India
Kynora co-founder, Maulik Ganatra, stated that the company's initial goal was to reach approximately 10,000 people during the fiscal year 2028. The company plans to promote the product directly through its website rather than through diagnostic laboratories initially. The launch will start in Mumbai, and Kynora plans further rollout activities in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bengaluru, and Delhi.
Ganatra specified that the testing component will be carried out in India, while the nutraceutical products accompanying the offering are currently imported from the UK. These supplements are planned to be manufactured in India later under license from Bio-Synergy, and Kynora also intends to use India as an export base for these supplements. The partnership comes amid rising Indian consumer spending on fitness, wellness, and personalized health products. Ganatra estimated the domestic supplement market at approximately 8,000 crore rupees, noting the category's annual growth rate of about 14 percent.
For Bio-Synergy, India represents an opportunity to expand beyond existing markets. Hermann explained the choice of Mumbai as a starting market because the city features a high level of new technology adoption and is a major fitness and lifestyle market. He also pointed to India's healthcare system, where consumers often pay for medical services directly, as a potential driver for preventative health products. The company's overall goal is to enable consumers to identify lifestyle-related health risks earlier and use this information to make changes or have more informed discussions with healthcare professionals. The kit is part of Bio-Synergy's broader personalized health offering, which also includes sports and nutritional supplements. The company notes that its epigenetic offering is designed to help consumers understand how lifestyle and environmental factors can influence biological aging and other health issues.
