With the launch of the Jantjies Boerdery Packhouse project in Taung, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Northwestern Province affirmed its commitment to expanding agro-processing, creating jobs, and strengthening farmers' participation in the agricultural value chain.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Madoda Sambata, accompanied by Deputy Minister of Agriculture Nokuzola Kapy, officially unveiled the packing plant located at Jantjies Boerdery and headed by Tshepiso Jantjes.
This project aims to boost the production and processing of alfalfa in Taung and is part of broader government efforts to support farmer-run enterprises that move beyond primary production to generate greater value in the agricultural supply chain.
Sambata emphasized that this investment should not be viewed merely as support for one specific enterprise, but as an intervention that will benefit the entire farming community of Taung. He explained that 'this investment is not just for Jantjes as an individual. Taung has one of the largest concentrations of alfalfa producers, so we are supporting alfalfa aggregation. There are many alfalfa farmers in this area, and our vision is to make Taung a regional alfalfa hub.'
He noted that developing the alfalfa value chain can increase agricultural output and employment opportunities in the municipality. 'Alfalfa production in Taung should help enhance the district's potential for job creation. The equipment provided to Jantjes is intended to assist not only this enterprise but also other farmers in Taung and surrounding areas in producing and processing alfalfa.'
The department supported this initiative by providing equipment for harvesting alfalfa, as well as equipment for processing and adding value, and packaging materials. This support is designed to increase production capacity, stimulate agro-processing, and give farmers a more significant role in the agricultural chain.
Sambata called on farmers to cooperate and utilize the opportunities provided by agro-processing. He stated that 'the department is ready to assist farmers with value-addition equipment to increase production capacity, create jobs, and support farmer development. We urge farmers to collaborate and ensure the processing of agricultural products, retaining value within our communities.'
Jantjies Boerdery is a farmer-run enterprise specializing in the production, harvesting, processing, packaging, and distribution of alfalfa products for the livestock feed market. Jantjes reported that they handle planting, harvesting, packaging, and delivery, and it took them over three years to reach their current level due to the need to comply with numerous regulatory procedures across the value chain.
He also noted that government support in the form of equipment played a crucial role in transitioning the enterprise from primary production to value addition. As an alfalfa agro-processor, compliance with industry standards, including the equipment used, is vital. With the alfalfa granulator, he can process the product into pellets; without the department's equipment support, he would not be able to produce such a product as pellets.
Furthermore, Jantjes participates in developing emerging farmers through mentorship and regular workshops aimed at providing smallholder farmers with practical knowledge about alfalfa production and processing.
