LibreOffice 26.8, released in August, introduced several new features, yet none of them incorporate artificial intelligence. The Document Foundation (TDF), responsible for the suite, emphasizes that the lack of AI should be seen as a positive characteristic, not as a delay in development.
This stance is not new; since the release of LibreOffice 26.8, the TDF had already indicated that the non-inclusion of AI in the version was a desirable attribute. This suggests a kind of resistance from the organization to the growing proliferation of artificial intelligence tools, assistants, and agents in various software, many of which do not add real value to the user.
In a statement published on its official blog, the TDF clarifies that its position is not an opposition to AI itself. On the contrary, the organization opposes any implementation that violates or conflicts with the fundamental principles guiding the project.
Italo Vignoli, spokesperson for The Document Foundation, stated that LibreOffice does not immediately reject artificial intelligence. However, he stressed that an office application package used by millions of people—covering schools, hospitals, government agencies, law firms, and numerous other entities—will only add AI functionalities to its default configuration when they can be delivered in compliance with the project's established principles.
Although the TDF text indicates the future possibility of AI features in LibreOffice, this inclusion is conditional upon respecting the mentioned principles. The TDF recognizes that, in the current landscape, these criteria have not yet been met, which justifies the absence of native AI features in the software.
Vignoli added that the presented criteria do not constitute a definitive refusal, given that the field of AI is constantly evolving. He stated that if a methodology emerges that satisfies all conditions, it will be analyzed with great rigor.
Nevertheless, the organization informs that users who require such functionalities can obtain them through third-party AI extensions for the suite.
