Scientists have established that chimpanzee vocalizations are related not only to assessing the nutritional value of food but also to distinguishing between different products that have the same value. It was observed that peak frequencies and initial formants differed in the calls made when consuming various foods.
During behavioral experiments, a chimpanzee named Patrick demonstrated the ability to distinguish recorded sounds of his conspecifics, suggesting that he may be able to understand what type of food these sounds refer to. The results of this study were published in the journal Animal Cognition.
