Weekly summary: Nobel Prize winners, solar activity, and new NASA projects

During this week, the winners of the Nobel Prize in various fields were announced. A group of scientists was recognized for advances that enabled the development of optogenetics, a method that allows studying in living brains how specific circuits influence memories, emotions, and behaviors. This discovery has also opened avenues for research into neurological disorders and potential medical applications.

Francis Halzen, a Belgian citizen, received the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and for identifying high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. The announcement was made this Tuesday, the 6th, and the award honors the conception of a massive detector installed in the Antarctic ice.

Regarding astronomy, while the James Webb and Nancy Grace Roman are expanding the boundaries of astronomical knowledge, NASA is developing a new space telescope. This mission, named PRIMA (PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics), will focus on the far-infrared and help scientists investigate everything from planet formation to the evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes. PRIMA has advanced to Phase B of development, which includes preliminary design and technological development, making it the first of a new category of medium-sized NASA missions called Probe Explorers.

In the solar field, after days of weak eruptions, the Sun was reported again with three M-class explosions (classified as moderate) in the last 24 hours. Two of these explosions occurred in the AR4549 region, a sunspot cluster that showed rapid growth and complex magnetic structure.

Other news includes Anthropic's advancement in access to its most sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) models for cybersecurity professionals. This change is part of a revised version of the Cyber Verification Program (CVP), designed to allow specialized organizations to use Anthropic's powerful models in fault detection, incident response, and security testing. Previously, the company's Project Glasswing helped partners locate at least 129 thousand verified software vulnerabilities between April and July 2026, with over 33 thousand classified as critical or high severity. However, Anthropic emphasizes that these numbers may represent only a fraction of the total, estimating that the real impact is at least five times greater, given that the data came from a study involving only part of the program's partners.

In the entertainment sector, the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery officially resulted in the creation of Skydance this Tuesday (6), consolidating one of Hollywood's largest entertainment groups. However, the start of the new company's activities brought negative news for employees, as the integration of the two companies is expected to generate layoffs.

Geographically, the arrival of the El Niño phenomenon is expected to alter the Brazilian agricultural routine. Producers in the South must prepare for periods of intense rainfall and excess water, while other regions will face drought, heat, and irregular precipitation. To mitigate these effects, Embrapa provided specific guidelines for each location, including the use of the Agricultural Climate Risk Zoning (Zarc), a tool that indicates the best planting times according to the climatic risk of each crop and region.
