Spotify launches audiobook catalog in Brazil with over 6 thousand titles in Portuguese

Spotify will begin offering its audiobook service in Brazil starting October 15th, adding over 6 thousand works in the Portuguese language to its catalog. This announcement was made by executive Owen Smith, who holds the position of Vice President and Global Head of Audiobooks at the company, during a press conference attended by Tecnoblog.

Although the audiobook offering has existed internationally since 2022, following tests conducted the previous year, Spotify integrated this content into Premium plans in 2023. Currently, the catalog exceeds 700 thousand titles distributed across 22 different markets. For Brazil, the company projects that there will be over 350 thousand titles available in more than 120 languages.

Brazilian users will have three ways to access audiobooks. According to Smith, the main modality will be Audiobooks+, a new subscription that grants a monthly quota of hours dedicated to listening to audiobooks. The price of this specific plan for the country has not yet been disclosed.

Additionally, qualifying Spotify Premium subscribers will be entitled to 12 monthly hours of audiobook content without needing to purchase an extra subscription. Another option is the individual purchase of titles, a feature accessible to both free plan users and Premium and Audiobooks+ subscribers.

The audiobooks will be fully integrated into the same platform used to consume music and podcasts. The platform's homepage will also be updated to suggest books based on each user's individual interests.

One of the highlighted features is Page Match, which allows the user to transition between the physical or digital version of a book and its corresponding audio version. It works like this: the user directs their phone camera at a page, and Spotify can identify the corresponding passage in the audiobook, ensuring playback continues exactly from that point.

The company also plans to increase the variety of locally produced content. Publishers and independent authors can submit their works through Spotify for Authors. It is important to note that the agreements made will not be exclusive, allowing the books to remain accessible on other platforms.

This expansion happens parallel to Spotify's growing presence in the publishing sector. In May, the company began offering over 650 extended magazine articles in audio format in markets where audiobooks are already available.

Data provided by the company itself indicates that the number of monthly audiobook listeners registered an increase of 39% between 2025 and 2026, while total listening hours grew by 32% in the same period. Spotify reports having a global audiobook collection of over 800 thousand titles.

Spotify presents instability and playback failures in several countries

Users who tried to access Spotify early on Tuesday afternoon, September 29th, reported difficulties accessing the service. The streaming service registered instability in both mobile applications and desktop versions, affecting users in several nations, including Brazil.

Although many users managed to open the Spotify application, they noticed that the content, whether music or podcast, was not playing. The material could only be played if it had already been downloaded to the device or was stored in the cache.

In other situations, upon opening the application, nothing appeared except an error message, as illustrated in a screenshot.

According to Downdetector records, complaints about problems with Spotify gained significant visibility on social media around 11:00 AM Brasília time. Even more than two hours after this peak, numerous complaints about the occurrence persisted.

Spotify itself communicated via the X platform a message stating that it was aware of certain errors in its service and that the investigation into the problem was underway.

Some users attempted to resolve the issue by removing and reinstalling the application, but without success. This occurred because the failure did not reside in the users' devices, but rather in Spotify's servers. Furthermore, some customers who had stopped using the service were unable to log in again.

Given that the failure affects the platform level, Spotify users have no alternative but to wait for the normal restoration of the service, although the company has not provided a timeframe for the completion of the repair.
