The European Union (EU) allocated 157 million euros to Moldova as part of the 10th Association Council between the EU and the country.
The 190-kilometer power grid, named the Trump Liberty Line, will connect the localities of Straseni in Moldova and Gutinas in Romania. Of this total, 70 kilometers cross Moldovan territory.
This project received an investment of 130 million dollars (equivalent to 115.5 million euros) from Washington. According to the statement, this initiative represents a significant advance for the energy autonomy and security of the former Soviet republic.
The installation work for the grid, which will be carried out by American companies, began the previous week, following the agreement signed between the companies Moldelectrica and Black&Veatch.
This will be the third power line connecting the two countries, which share strong cultural, linguistic, and ethnic ties, leading some of the Moldovan population to acquire Romanian citizenship.
Currently, Moldova faces an electricity deficit, depending on imports from Romania and Ukraine, the latter country that has supported Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict with Russia.
Although Moldova has ceased importing Russian gas, it still depends on Romania for over 50% of its electricity needs, a percentage that is expected to decrease with the implementation of this new infrastructure.
In response to the situation, the local Parliament declared an energy state of emergency on September 26, valid for 60 days.
Additionally, another electricity transport corridor, which will connect Azerbaijan to the autonomous region of Nakhchivan, whose namesake capital is 450 kilometers west of Baku, passing through southern Armenia, will also be named in honor of Donald Trump. This decision follows the peace pre-agreement signed by Armenians and Azerbaijanis at the White House.
