Police authorities in the KwaZulu-Natal province have received information about WhatsApp messages offering jobs in the South African Police Service (SAPS) contingent upon an upfront payment of 15,000 South African Rand.
SAPS has confirmed that such offers are fraudulent. The phishing advertisements use a photograph of the Deputy Commissioner for Corporate Services of KwaZulu-Natal, Major General SB Ngcobo.
A police representative, Deputy Colonel Paul Magwaza, stated that the scammers' scheme involves sending messages on WhatsApp to uninterested individuals promising employment in the police service. Subsequently, the scammers immediately send a job application form to the potential victim.
The fraudsters demand 15,000 Rand for the supposedly offered job. However, according to Magwaza, victims are advised to deposit 7,500 Rand and pay the remainder after signing the employment contract.
The public is strongly urged to be vigilant regarding such messages on WhatsApp and to report them to the nearest police station. Magwaza emphasized that employment in SAPS is not sold, and no one should pay for a job in the police service, as this constitutes a crime.
