Betting websites and applications that previously had legalization in Brazil have become unavailable as of today. Lusa attempted to access several of these portals and was redirected to the official website of the Brazilian Government, brasilsembets.gov.br, where a message stating 'Access blocked' is displayed.
The notice shown on the page informs that the betting platform in question is offline due to the determination of Provisional Measure No. 1.394/26. This measure prohibits both sports betting and online casinos in Brazilian territory starting from September 25, 2026.
Furthermore, the publication offers guidance to bettors who have not yet withdrawn deposited funds from these platforms. Instructions are also provided on how to report illegal casinos and betting, along with a health alert intended to help individuals with gambling addiction.
The latest report released by the Brazilian Government, dated September 29, revealed that 5,209 betting platform websites and approximately 200 virtual store applications have already been blocked.
On September 28, the Brazilian President, Lula da Silva, warned that his government would take rigorous measures against influencers who attempt to travel to Portugal with the intention of promoting betting platforms, aiming to circumvent the regulation of so-called 'bets'.
On the same day, the Brazilian Government initiated a public civil action against 17 betting companies. In this action, a minimum amount of one billion reais (equivalent to 168.76 million euros) was requested in compensation for collective moral damages caused by bettors' addiction.
The legal claim also seeks the return of amounts bet by people in situations of over-indebtedness or with pathological gambling, and aims to force companies to cover the costs incurred by the federal Government with treatments and public policies related to health problems arising from betting.
