BCCI announces India squad for New Zealand tour; Bhuvneshwar Kumar returns

The selection subcommittee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the squads for the Indian team and the India 'A' team for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. As part of this tour, the main Indian team will play an exciting five-match T20 series against the host nation, New Zealand, while the India 'A' team will play three multi-day (four-day) matches against New Zealand 'A'. Squads for ODI and Test formats have not yet been announced.

The main news in the squad is the return of experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the national team, who has once again been tasked with bowling in the blue jersey. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain, and Tilak Verma has been given the role of vice-captain.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return became possible after he last participated in a T20 match in November 2022 during the T20 World Cup semi-final against England at the Adelaide Oval. After that, he was out of the team, but his impressive performance for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the last two IPL seasons attracted the attention of selectors.

Having bowled over 45 wickets in the previous two tournaments and playing a crucial role in winning the title for his team, he has received another chance in the national team due to his swing and experience with the new ball. However, due to this selection, Bhuvneshwar Kumar must leave Hong Kong Six, where he was recently appointed captain.

The T20 squad includes: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Verma (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Akshar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Diar, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshadeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakravarthy, and Kuldeep Yadav.

The India 'A' squad includes: Dhruv Jurel (captain/wicketkeeper), Yashasvi Jaiswal, K.L. Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Ravichandran Samaran, Rishabh Pant* (wicketkeeper - subject to fitness), Washington Sundar, Akib Nabi, Akash Dip, Anshul Kamboj, Manav Sutar, Mukesh Choudhary, Sai Sudarshan, Yash Rathore, and Mukesh Kumar.

Expert notes potential of Bhuvneshwar Kumar after visit to New Zealand

Following a tour of the West Indies, the Indian team will travel to New Zealand. A squad has been announced for a five-match T20 series against New Zealand, which includes the experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to the T20 squad has sparked active discussions in cricket circles. In this regard, former Indian international spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made a significant statement.

Ashwin believes that if Bhuvneshwar demonstrates outstanding performance during the matches in New Zealand, he might soon return to the ODI squad. Moreover, he could end up alongside Jasprit Bumrah, bowling in the World Cup next year.

Discussing the situation on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin highly praised Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He suggested that if he had been luckier and avoided injuries, he could have become an outstanding player for India across all formats.

Ashwin emphasized that Bhuvneshwar possesses unique ball-turning skills, allowing him to change trajectory in both directions. Referring to the recent series against the West Indies, where bowlers were criticized, Ashwin noted the team's urgent need for experienced bowlers. He added that the selection committee included Bhuvneshwar in the T20 squad as a reliable option.

Ashwin also stated that if Bhuvneshwar can demonstrate his physical fitness and spin mastery in New Zealand, the Bumrah-Bhuvneshwar pair could soon take the field in the first over of the World Cup tournament.

It is worth noting that the five-match T20 series between India and New Zealand begins on October 22. It will now be interesting to see if Bhuvneshwar can seize this opportunity to secure his place in the ODI team.

India's squad announcement for matches against New Zealand expected this week

Tensions have risen surrounding the Indian cricket team's tour to New Zealand. The Indian team is scheduled to travel to New Zealand at the end of this month for a lengthy tournament featuring five T20 matches, five ODI matches, and two Test matches.

The composition of the Indian team is expected to be announced this week. Although many players may feature in the squad, there is important news regarding the selection process that will take place this time.

According to media reports, a meeting of the senior men's selection committee of the BCCI is scheduled for this week, between October 5th and 11th. Notably, the term of Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar expired on October 4th, but the council has not yet announced his successor.

Until a new selector is appointed, the committee will operate with four members. It is anticipated that former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha may lead the first such meeting. Although it is unclear whether this arrangement is temporary or permanent, there are rumors that the full squads for all formats for the New Zealand tour will be announced this week.

Cricket circles are actively discussing which strong players will return to the team and who will get a chance before the new squad is released. Captain Shubman Gill indicated after the recent ODI series against West India that he wants all key players to be available for the upcoming matches.

Thus, the inclusion of veterans in the limited-overs formats for the New Zealand tour is considered inevitable. The two Test matches in New Zealand are of great importance for maintaining hopes for the 2027 WTC World Cup.

It is also suggested that fast bowler Mukesh Kumar from Bengal, who made a splash with his lethal performance in Jammu and Kashmir during the Iran Cup, might return to the Test squad. Mukesh Kumar helped the team win the Iran Cup final while playing for Rest of India, taking 6 wickets. Additionally, Akash Dip may also secure a spot in the team for the matches.

Changes in West Indies squad before T20 series: batsman who scored 239 runs called up

Tension has increased within the West Indies team ahead of the five-match T20 series against India. Young batsman and wicketkeeper Joel Andrew sustained a finger injury during the third ODI match of the series, played in Mullumpura, and has not yet fully recovered.

During the 36th over, an attack by India, a ball bowled by Gudakesh Motie, struck Joel Andrew's finger while he was catching the ball towards the cover. He subsequently had to leave the field. Andrew was taken to the hospital for examination, but X-rays and scans did not reveal any fractures. Nevertheless, he could not immediately return to the field and did not participate in the West Indies' chase for a record score. The medical team continues to monitor the condition of his injury.

Jangu's Form

Middle-order batsman Amir Jangu has been included in the T20 squad as a replacement for Joel Andrew. However, Joel Andrew has not been completely ruled out of the series; the West Indies medical staff is closely monitoring his condition, and he still has a chance to play. Left-handed batsman Jangu is currently in excellent form.

The recently concluded three-match ODI series against India was very memorable for Amir Jangu. In the first match of the series, the 29-year-old Jangu was not dismissed and scored 58 runs. In the second match, he showed brilliant play, scoring 114 runs. His form continued in the third match, where he contributed 67 runs. Thus, Jangu scored a total of 239 runs across the three matches, becoming the third-highest scorer in the India-West Indies ODI series, behind Indian captain Shubman Gill and West Indies captain Shai Hope.

Amir Jangu debuted in international cricket in December 2024. To date, he has played seven international T20 matches, scoring 163 runs at an average strike rate of 120.74. He can also play as a wicketkeeper, giving West Indies an additional option for squad selection.

Updated West Indies T20 Squad: Shai Hope (Captain), Roston Chase, Matthew Ford, Shimron Hetmyer, Akil Hussain, Amir Jangu, Sharme Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Kimo Paul, Kamil Purran, Rovmen Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Romario Shepherd, and Sharme Springer.

India-West Indies T20 Series Schedule:

  • First T20: October 6, Lucknow
  • Second T20: October 9, Ranchi
  • Third T20: October 11, Indore
  • Fourth T20: October 14, Hyderabad
