Drivers traveling through Camps Bay should prepare for changes on one of the area's busiest coastal roads, as roadworks are set to commence on Victoria Road, according to Cape Etc.
The City of Cape Town has announced that works between Geneva Drive and Kloof Road will start this week, with the planned commencement date being October 9, 2026, provided the schedule is maintained. The project is scheduled to last until the end of November, meaning road users will face construction activity for several weeks.
Key changes during the works
The most significant changes will be implemented in two phases. During the first two weeks, drivers can expect temporary lane closures from 08:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday. Following this initial period, the work will shift to a night schedule. Construction will take place from 20:00 to 05:30 from Monday to Saturday, with temporary lane restrictions introduced to facilitate the crews working on the road.
The city warned of potential traffic delays and disruptions, especially during the nighttime construction activities. Rob Quintas, a member of the City of Cape Town's Municipal Mobility Committee, stated that these works are part of a broader program for the city's road maintenance.
The goal of the project is to improve the road's condition and provide a smoother and safer surface for those who use this route.
The work will be carried out one lane at a time, allowing traffic to continue moving through the construction zone while crews are working. The project will cover several types of maintenance, including repairing and upgrading the road itself and adjacent infrastructure. Sections of curbs and drainage channels will be re-laid, and damaged sections of the pavement will be repaired. Furthermore, workers will replace damaged layers beneath parts of the road before repaving the affected areas.
For regular users of Victoria Road, the most noticeable consequence will likely be the temporary lane and shoulder restrictions during the works. The city acknowledged that the project may cause inconvenience to residents, businesses, and other road users in Camps Bay. It asked drivers and the local community to exercise patience and cooperation during the repair works.
Since the project is planned until the end of November, everyone traveling along the affected section of Victoria Road should allow extra time and account for the temporary measures put in place for the construction when planning journeys.
