First T20 match between India and West Indies to take place in Lucknow

The Indian team is preparing to start its new T20 tournament after winning the gold medal at the Asian Games. Today, Tuesday, October 6th, the first of five scheduled T20 matches between India and West Indies will be held at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The ceremonial coin toss will take place shortly.

After the completion of the ODI series, both teams are fully prepared for competition in the shortest format—T20. The Indian team decided to rest fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah so that he can fully recover before the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.

Despite an impressive performance at the Asian Games, the Indian team maintains a high level of confidence. Meanwhile, the West Indies team, which previously defeated India in the third ODI match by 5 wickets, takes the field with great enthusiasm.

According to AccuWeather forecasts, the probability of rain during the game is only between 1 and 4 percent, allowing fans to enjoy the full 40-over match without interruptions. In the evening, the air temperature is expected to drop to 25–27 degrees Celsius, ensuring comfortable weather. However, humidity is expected to reach about 80 percent in the second half of the game, which may create difficulties for bowlers due to dew. Because of this, the team that wins the right to toss may prefer to start with bowling.

This match will be played at the Ekana ground in Lucknow, which has a ranking of number 5. This stadium has seen a high number of runs scored during the IPL 2026, sometimes exceeding 200. Nevertheless, the average score for the first half of a T20 International match here usually hovers around 160 runs.

Historically, 31 T20 International matches have been played between India and the West Indies, with India having the advantage. India won 20 matches, while the West Indies won 10 encounters, and one match ended in a draw.

This first T20 match between India and West Indies can be watched on television on Star Sports Network and DD Sports. Additionally, the broadcast will be available online via the JioHotstar app and website.

India's squad for the first T20 against West Indies: Sanju Samson may start the game

Following the gold medal win at the 2026 Asian Games, the Indian team's focus has shifted to the upcoming T20 series against the West Indies. The game is set to begin at 19:00 Indian time.

Recently, the Indian team secured its second consecutive gold in the men's final of the Asian Games, defeating Pakistan. Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Verma made significant contributions in the final, while Shivam Dube demonstrated versatile skills.

Shreyas Iyer will captain the team during this T20 series. He also led the Indian team that won gold at the Asian Games. His current goal is to start the series with a victory over the West Indies. Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Verma will strengthen the middle order. They will once again be watched closely after their impressive performance in the Asian Games final.

Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy will provide the team with options in both batting and bowling. Akshar Patel may play as a spin-all-rounder. There is a possibility that Prince Yadav will get a chance as the second fast bowler.

India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, commented on Vaibhav Suryavanshi, stating: 'Vaibhav is very talented and in good form, but sometimes you have to wait for your chance because we want to create an atmosphere of security in the dressing room.'

Former captain Dilip Vengsarkar criticizes player selection, questioning the value of the Ranji Trophy

Dilip Vengsarkar, a former captain and distinguished cricketer, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the selection of the Indian squad, raising a serious question about why players who perform brilliantly in domestic cricket (Ranji Trophy) are not given a deserved place in the national team.

Vengsarkar stated that if performances in domestic tournaments do not qualify one for the international team, then holding these tournaments is pointless. Discussing this in an interview with a media channel, he sharply remarked: 'If you believe that these domestic matches are not the basis for selection, then just stop the Ranji Trophy. Don't play it.'

He emphasized that players put in enormous effort, win matches, and take crucial wickets. If they are not given a chance in the Indian team after all this, it is considered a waste of time.

Vengsarkar specifically highlighted the fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir, Akib Nabi, who made a splash in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy. He is currently part of the ODI team against the West Indies but is still awaiting his debut.

Expressing surprise over the exclusion of the outstanding bowler Mohammad Shammi from the team, Vengsarkar noted that Shammi took 37 wickets in the recent Ranji season and had an average below 17. Furthermore, he contributed significantly to the Eastern region's championship in the Dilip Trophy 2026.

Mohammad Shammi has been outside the test squad since June 2023 and in international cricket since March 2025. Vengsarkar strongly advocated for Shammi's inclusion before the upcoming test series against New Zealand, asserting that he did not understand why he was excluded. He considers Shammi an excellent bowler who has demonstrated outstanding results both domestically and internationally, and he should be an important part of the Indian team.
