15-year CRPF-ITBP camp in Bastar converted into dormitory for tribal students

Bastar, previously known for the sounds of military boots and rifle shots due to terrorist activity, is now beginning a new chapter. In the forests of Abujmadar, where fear once reigned and the steps of servicemen echoed, today the laughter of small children in school uniforms can be heard.

This has become a unique event in the history of the Bastar district, attracting the attention of the entire country. The former ITBP and CRPF security camp, where operations against Naxalites were conducted for 15 years, has now become a refuge for the dreams of tribal children.

After peace settled in the region, the administration made a historic decision. Starting August 11, 2026, this old military complex was completely transformed into a dormitory for Scheduled Tribe (ST) children. Where weapons and combat units once were, more than 150 tribal students now live and study, ranging from grades 6 to 12.

The administration divided the camp into two sections to facilitate the education of children arriving from remote villages. The primary dormitory (for grades 6-10) was designed for 100 beds, but currently houses 114 students. The senior high school dormitory (grades 11-12) has a capacity of 50 beds and currently accommodates 39 students.

A special advantage is that the government secondary school is located just 50 meters from the dormitory premises. This living arrangement is also available to students from the town of Education City Kutul.

Previously, children coming from dense forests and distant villages had to rent rooms in the city for their studies, which placed an additional financial burden on poor tribal families. Now they receive safe accommodation and free meals. Following the successful experience in Bastar, the administration decided to expand this initiative: preparations have begun to create a dormitory for girls, which will be located in another military camp in Kurushnar.
