The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) reported that the average clearing price on the 'Day Ahead' market in September 2026 was 7.3 rupees per unit, representing a 105 percent increase compared to the previous year. This sharp jump occurred against the backdrop of high electricity demand.
Strong energy demand also led to a 281 percentage point increase in purchase bids on the 'Day Ahead' market, which contributed to rising market prices. Similarly, the average clearing price on the 'Real Time' market reached 6.9 rupees per unit in September, which is also a year-on-year increase of 108 percent.
During September, IEX registered an electricity trading volume of 12,220 million units (MU), which is 10.4 percent higher compared to the same period last year. Electricity demand remained high, peaking at 269 GW on September 10, 2026. Total energy consumption in the country reached 162 billion units, reflecting an 11 percentage point growth.
In the second quarter of 2026-27, trading volume on IEX increased by 12.7 percent to 39,685 MU. The exchange noted that the average clearing price on the 'Day Ahead' market in Q2 FY27 reached 5.7 rupees per unit, which is 46 percent higher than in Q2 FY26.
Likewise, the average clearing price on the 'Real Time' market in Q2 FY27 was 5.2 rupees per unit, demonstrating a 49 percent increase compared to Q2 FY26. During this same quarter, total energy consumption in the country reached 502 billion units, showing a year-on-year increase of 11.5 percent.
For the second quarter ending in September 2026, the 'Day Ahead' market (DAM), including HPDAM, recorded a total volume of 14,855 MU compared to 14,534 MU in Q2 FY26, representing an increase of 2.2 percent. The DAM segment accounted for 37.4 percent of the total electricity trading volume in the second quarter.
Regarding the IEX Green Market, which includes the Green Day Ahead and Green Term Ahead Market segments, the volume achieved in Q2 FY27 was 2,863 MU, compared to 3,040 MU in Q2 FY26, indicating a year-on-year decrease of 5.8 percent.
