GST Council meeting postponed again to October 8

The 57th GST Council meeting has been postponed for the second time, with the new date set for October 8. The GST Council Secretariat reported in an internal memo that the postponement is due to 'unavoidable circumstances.'

The session was originally scheduled for October 7. The GST Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and including state ministers, plans to discuss changes to registration, reporting, and refund mechanisms at its meeting on Thursday.

Furthermore, the meeting will address policy reforms aimed at resolving GST disputes and improving the flow of input tax credit, with the goal of reducing compliance costs and time.

According to sources, the GST Council is likely to consider large-scale procedural reforms to decriminalize GST violations, abolish the power to arrest GST officials, and simplify tax compliance for businesses, including e-commerce providers.

Previously, the meeting, which was initially scheduled for September 12, was postponed to October 7 due to the BRICS summit. India hosted the annual BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
