Chery introduces electric car Q for urban driving with maneuverable handling

Chery has launched its new electric vehicle, the Q, in the South African market with a starting price of R350,000. This compact electric car was primarily designed for urban use, combining a 90 kW electric motor and a 42.7 kWh battery. According to stated data, it is capable of traveling up to 400 km on the NEDC cycle.

Representatives from Chery South Africa note that the goal of creating the Q is to make electric mobility more accessible to local drivers while providing the practicality expected of a daily transport vehicle. Wren Petersen, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Chery South Africa, emphasized that the Q is designed to make electric driving a realistic option for a larger number of South African residents.

She added that the compact dimensions make the car ideal for the city, yet it retains the necessary volume, range, and everyday practicality that buyers expect from their primary transport. The starting price of R350,000, she said, marks an important step towards increasing the accessibility of electric mobility locally.

Designed for confined spaces

The Q's minimum turning radius is 5.225 meters, which, according to Chery, helps the car maneuver more easily on narrow streets, during turns, and when parking. The car is equipped with an intelligent C-EPS steering effort control system. At low speeds, the steering feels lighter, facilitating parking and complex maneuvers; however, the steering effort increases at higher speeds.

For city drivers, this combination is intended to reduce the physical effort required for daily turns and parking. The Chery Q uses rear-wheel drive and independent suspension, optimized for urban driving.

Practical storage

The car offers 375 liters of trunk space, which can be expanded to 1,450 liters if additional volume is needed. Additionally, there is a 70-liter front trunk (frunk) and smaller storage compartments located throughout the cabin. The car's design, with wheels positioned at the corners and short overhangs at the front and rear, contributes to efficient cabin layout and overall stance. Depending on the modification, it can be fitted with 16 or 17-inch wheels.

The exterior design of the Q is complemented by semi-recessed door handles, two-tone side mirrors, and a floating rear spoiler. Chery's style philosophy for the Q is called 'Harmony of Square and Circle,' which combines angular proportions with rounded details. The closed grille reflects the presence of an electric powertrain, and the Q-shaped LED headlights give the car a recognizable visual feature; each LED camera includes a curved light element. The design has also received the Red Dot Product Design Award. The entire line is available in a high-gloss six-layer paint finish, accompanied by a ten-year anti-fading warranty.

Tech-focused cabin

Inside the Q, there is a two-tone dashboard, contrasting air vents, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The column shifter frees up space on the center console, creating additional storage space underneath. The dashboard features an 8.8-inch digital display next to a 15.6-inch 2.5K central touchscreen, which runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor. The infotainment system supports a customizable home screen and gesture control.

Furthermore, Chery notes that the windshield has an area of 1.22 square meters, and the upper viewing angle is 16.8 degrees, which improves visibility in traffic and tight conditions. The Elite modification is equipped with driver assistance systems and automatic parking aimed at simplifying urban driving and parking.

Jaecoo 5 vs Omoda 5 Comparison: Analysis of Chery's Hybrid SUVs

Despite high expectations, the Jaecoo 5 was launched in the Brazilian market with prices very close to those of its sibling model, the Omoda 5. Although the purchasing decision may seem purely aesthetic, there are notable distinctions in both the equipment package and the level of finish offered by the vehicles.

The Jaecoo 5 Comfort is priced at R$ 159,990, making it R$ 5,000 more affordable than the entry-level version of the Omoda 5. Meanwhile, the top-tier Prestige version has the same cost of R$ 184,990 as the Omoda 5 coupe SUV.

Since both share the same mechanics, the comparison focused on other attributes to determine which Chery Global hybrid SUV offers the best cost-benefit.

The Omoda & Jaecoo strategy is to present vehicles with mechanical similarity and segmentation but with distinct design proposals. The Jaecoo 5, with its more traditional look, offers benefits for family use. This model provides more space in the rear seat, as the coupe SUV format of the Omoda 5 compromises passenger headroom. Furthermore, the Jaecoo 5 has a larger trunk, with a capacity of 410 liters, compared to the 372 liters of the Omoda 5.

In the initial Comfort version, there is the advantage of a R$ 5,000 lower price. However, this financial difference may be insignificant when considering the missing features, as will be detailed later.

The powertrain for both consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine coupled with an electric motor, generating a total of 224 hp and 30.1 kgfm. The acceleration performance from 0 to 100 km/h is identical, reaching 7.9 seconds in both models. However, a slight variation in fuel consumption is observed, with the Jaecoo 5 being slightly more efficient.

Analyzing the entry-level versions, the Omoda 5 Luxury justifies the additional cost of R$ 5,000 with several convenience items: full-LED headlights, keyless entry with smart entry function, 12.3-inch multimedia center, front and rear parking sensors, 360° camera, and digital dashboard with trip computer. Additionally, the Omoda 5 Luxury includes amenities such as soft finishes on the dashboard and doors, electric sunroof, and customizable ambient lighting.

Conversely, the Jaecoo 5 Comfort features halogen headlights, keyless entry without the smart entry feature, a 9-inch multimedia center, and a more basic LCD digital panel.

When comparing the top versions, named Prestige in both vehicles and at the same price, the Omoda 5 offers only two extra features. The coupe SUV has an electrochromic interior rearview mirror and heated front seats, while the Jaecoo only offers ventilation.

Both models share the ADAS package, the eight-speaker Sony sound system, and the electric trunk opening. The Jaecoo 5 differs by having a large panoramic sunroof, whereas the Omoda 5's is smaller.

The final choice between these two hybrid SUVs should be determined by the buyer's usage profile. The Jaecoo 5 is recommended for those who prioritize family use and require greater trunk capacity. However, one must be warned about the simplicity of the Comfort version, which features rigid plastic trim, an un-upholstered steering wheel, and halogen headlights. If the consumer does not miss the 32 liters of trunk space and the extra space in the rear seat, the Omoda 5 is considered the more advantageous option.
