Indian company develops secure communication network for military that can operate without mobile towers

Following the pager and radio explosions involving Hezbollah devices in Lebanon in 2024, which resulted in many deaths or injuries due to a hidden threat in the equipment, the Indian company IDR has created its own system.

This system allows Indian military personnel to communicate with each other without relying on mobile towers or external networks. The system functions based on a mesh network, where each device is connected as a small link. If one unit fails or is blocked by an adversary, the message is automatically relayed through other devices, ensuring multiple communication paths.

Furthermore, the communication is encrypted, making it unintelligible to the enemy even if they manage to intercept it. The company claims that the system's range reaches seven kilometers, allowing soldiers to maintain contact in mountains, forests, or areas lacking mobile signal.

In combat situations, maintaining contact with units is critically important. Loss of contact means orders do not reach their destination, which can lead to serious losses. Older communication methods required reliance on mobile towers; if the enemy destroys a tower or jams the signal, all communication ceases.

The new system is entirely Indian and does not contain foreign components, which eliminates errors similar to those that occurred with pagers. It can be used not only by military personnel deployed on the border but also by teams working in forests and by emergency responders during disasters such as floods.

This project aligns with India's broader trend toward self-production of weaponry and equipment. Although the current range is seven kilometers, further increases in distance and improvements in battery autonomy are planned. The implementation of this technology will enhance the security of military communications, allowing personnel to communicate while avoiding enemy detection, and will make military communication more reliable.
