English fast bowler Craig Miles has decided to hang up his professional cricket boots at the young age of 32. During his fifteen-year career, Miles took over 500 wickets, but he made this significant decision prioritizing his mental health.
He officially announced his departure through an emotional open letter on the Gloucestershire County club website. His last match for Gloucestershire was played in the Vitality Blast in June 2026, after which he stepped away from cricket. During this period, he deeply reflected on his career, mental state, and relationship with the sport, which ultimately led him to decide to retire.
In his letter, Craig Miles emphasized that the decision to step away from cricket was not easy for him, but under current circumstances, it became necessary to prioritize his mental well-being. He shared that he had been struggling with psychological pressure, excessive self-expectations, and constant self-doubt recently. According to him, the high standards he set for himself often created difficulties, and after poor performances, he would begin to question his abilities.
Miles noted that in the early stages of his career, he could attribute such problems to poor form or minor obstacles in his path. However, this time the situation was different, and he realized he was no longer in the mental state that would allow him to train and perform at the level he set for himself.
Craig Miles's career was filled with numerous achievements. He debuted in first-class cricket at the age of just 16. Over 15 years, he played 111 first-class matches, 57 List A matches, and 71 T20 matches. In total, he accumulated 512 wickets. Despite this, he never had the opportunity to play for England internationally.
His record also includes victories in the ODI Cup and the County Championship. Announcing his departure, Craig Miles expressed pride in these achievements and stated that he is now able to appreciate these accomplishments much better than before.
Gloucestershire's Cricket Director, John Lewis, fully supported Miles's decision. He stated that speaking openly about one's struggles is a sign of character and courage, not weakness. Lewis stressed that Craig Miles is not just a Gloucestershire player, but a person closely connected to the club. He assured that the club would provide him with all the necessary support as he transitions to life outside of cricket.
