The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House is forming a new working group to assess potential threats and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence, as well as to define the government's responsibility in this area. This group has been allocated 120 days to prepare a report.
The working group, named 'Superintelligence Forces,' will be headed by US National Intelligence Director James Clayton. The group also includes Vice President Jay D Vance, Pentagon chief Pete Hegset, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
According to Clayton, the main task of the group is to ensure US leadership in advanced AI technologies. Furthermore, it will develop mechanisms to prevent excessive regulation that could hinder innovation and competition.
These steps are being taken against the backdrop of growing concern that powerful AI systems could escape human control.
Elon Musk told The Economist that in about five years, the cumulative intelligence of AI could surpass human intelligence. He also noted that the probability of humans maintaining control over such systems after ten years is low.
Other experts also express concerns: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spoke about the possibility of creating systems that humans cannot control, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned about threats related to powerful AI models.
Additionally, on September 29, Donald Trump planned to sign an executive order providing for the use of the term 'superintelligence' instead of 'artificial intelligence' in the US executive branch.
