The couple took advantage of the friend's condition to persuade him to give them 18,700 euros from his savings, leaving the victim without funds. The incident occurred in Cantabria, Spain. The regional prosecutor's office demanded a five-year prison sentence for the accused.
The victim's mother, quoted by Telecinco, reported that the man 'didn't even have money to pay for a bus.' For several months, the couple visited the victim's residence, which has hearing impairments (hypoacusia), developmental delays, and mild intellectual disability. They encouraged him to spend almost all his property for their personal gain to achieve illegal profit.
Specifically, the man received about 10,000 euros, and the woman accumulated 5,700 euros. Additionally, the couple repeatedly persuaded the victim to give them about 3,000 euros in cash, resulting in him having no money left.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, the fraud committed by the suspects is particularly serious because they knowingly exploited the victim's situation of vulnerability and intellectual inadequacy. In this regard, the body requested that they be punished with five years of imprisonment and a fine of 5,400 euros, as well as compensation to the victim in the amount of 18,700 euros, which was allegedly stolen.
The preliminary hearing will take place at the First Division of the Provincial Court of Cantabria next Wednesday, October 7, where the parties may reach an agreement. Otherwise, a trial will follow.
