Before switching to the latest flagship from Apple, it is worth considering how the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max offers a brighter display, a massive 8,500 mAh battery, and significant cost savings without compromising top-tier performance.
You shouldn't rush to buy the new iPhone until you try the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max. Xiaomi often draws inspiration from Apple, and the recent release of the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max is no exception.
After Apple released the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9th, Xiaomi presented its 18 Pro Max just 14 days later.
Of course, Apple also pays attention to competitors, but it avoids adopting absolutely identical model names.
Both devices have similar physical dimensions, although the Xiaomi feels slightly more maneuverable, being about nine grams lighter.
However, the most noticeable difference appears in the display. Xiaomi achieves an impressive peak brightness of 4,000 nits, whereas Apple's is 3,000 nits. In practice, this extra space allows for much easier viewing of photos, videos, and text outdoors under strong sunlight when using the Xiaomi.
The difference in battery capacity is even more obvious. Although the A20 Pro chip inside the iPhone boasts exceptional energy efficiency, its physical battery is significantly smaller. The iPhone is equipped with a 5,567 mAh cell, while the Xiaomi has a massive 8,500 mAh capacity.
In real-world use, this discrepancy is hard to ignore: the Xiaomi comfortably provides two to three full days of operation on a single charge, whereas the iPhone typically lasts about one and a half to two days.
Regarding price, there remains a significant gap between these two flagships. Even though the Xiaomi is not yet available directly through official retail channels in South Africa, purchasing it will still be noticeably cheaper.
The base model of the iPhone 18 Pro Max with 256 GB starts from R31,399, while the equivalent Xiaomi is projected to be in the range of R25,000 to R28,000.
Ultimately, if a user wishes to save a significant amount of money without sacrificing flagship capabilities, Xiaomi presents a compelling argument. However, if staying within the seamless Apple ecosystem is critical for them, they will need to prepare their wallet for additional financial outlay.
