Stormers expect return of Springboks players for match against Sharks in URC

Flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu may be one of the few returning Springboks players to join the Stormers squad before their derby against Sharks in the United Rugby Championship (URC) this Saturday in Cape Town.

Stormers are expected to bring in their Springboks players this week for the clash with Sharks at the DHL stadium. This match is highly significant for the Cape Town team as it is their first home game of the new season, and they are facing an opponent they failed to defeat in two previous coastal derbies last year.

Meanwhile, the Durban side has already included its Boks players, including lock Andre Esterhuizen, wingers Ethan Hooker and Edwin van der Merwe, and versatile prop Thomas du Toit. All these players have played one match after the tough game against Leinster last Saturday, posing a challenge for Stormers rugby director John Dobson regarding the management of international player returns.

However, it is suggested that flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, versatile defender Damian Willemse, versatile forward Deon Fourie, tighthead prop Wilco Louw, and flanker Paul de Villiers should be available for selection.

Following the 17-13 loss to Edinburgh in Scotland on Friday, where Stormers had a chance to win, the team needs a boost to its starting lineup. The main question is where exactly they will fit into the scheme. Feinberg-Mngomezulu is needed at position #10 to direct the attack, although Dobson previously stated that his return would be managed. But given that Yuri Matty is on the injury list and young player Yaqeen Ahmed is still developing, using this Springboks playmaker in this match seems the most logical. His participation will likely be the easiest, alongside the potential return of Wilco Louw, although Stormers tightheads have shown good performance in scrums.

The dilemma arises at the fullback, inside centre, and flanker positions. Will Willemse return to position #15, or will Dobson risk placing the two-time world champion next to captain Ruhan Nel in the half-back line? Currently, given how the defensive line is struggling to initiate attacks, the decision might be to move Willemse to the inside centre position next to Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Nel to add another dimension to the attack, as well as provide him as a kicking option.

Rookie Jonathan Roach has performed reasonably well in the half-back line in the last two games, but Willemse's experience might be exactly what the Cape Town team needs against Sharks, especially considering the imposing presence of Andre Esterhuizen in the half-back line.

De Villiers should take the place of the primary player at position #6, despite the return of Kolisi and the availability of experienced Deon Fourie. The 22-year-old player has shown his value to the Springboks and should be immediately brought back into the starting lineup. Fourie could then become an option at the hooker position, especially after starting player #2 Andre-Hugo Winter sustained a head injury against Edinburgh, and inexperienced Vernon Paulo struggled with the throw-in.

Kolisi could play an important role as an impact substitute against former teammates. Dobson hinted that the squad will look significantly different from the teams participating in the tour as the important period of home games in the URC approaches.

He stated: 'We are very excited about the upcoming match against Sharks. Obviously, our squad will look different (with the return of Boks players). It will be a big event, and we will be much better than against Edinburgh.'

Stormers demand more decisiveness ahead of Edinburgh match in URC

Stormers captain Ruan Nel and his teammates intend to improve their efficiency during the clash with Edinburgh on Friday evening, as part of the second round of the United Rugby Championship (URC).

The Stormers team will strive for a more decisive style of play when meeting Edinburgh at Hive Stadium on Friday. The goal is another URC victory, which will bring bonus points. After defeating Connacht in the opening match of the campaign, the team plans to continue playing with improved performance, aiming to maintain an unbeaten streak.

However, the game takes place at a stadium where they have not previously won in the URC, foreshadowing a tense match. Last Friday in Galway, Stormers defeated the hosts 29-15, but a large number of missed attacking opportunities almost cost them the win. Therefore, in Edinburgh, the team will focus on converting all scoring chances when they are within reach.

This will be critically important if the South African team wants to secure its first victory over the hosts at the well-known difficult Hive Stadium. They will have to face not only the 15 players of the Scottish club but also a highly motivated home crowd.

Nevertheless, Stormers is an experienced team, and the return of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi should inspire the players even more. Young player Yakin Ahmed, who plays winger, is also ready to activate the guests' attack. In the opening match in Galway, the defensive line was forced to give way to the forwards.

Rugby Director John Dobson noted: 'We know that Edinburgh is a difficult place to play, and we have some experience, including Siya, Ntuthuko (Mchunu) and Stefan (Ungerer), as well as Yakin Ahmed and Vandile Mlaba, who are very interesting young players.' He added: 'All 23 players will need to make great efforts to achieve results before we return to Cape Town for the decisive period of our season.'

After their first victory over Ulster last week, Edinburgh will be determined to maintain their winning streak against Stormers, but head coach Sean Everitt is aware of this challenge. They have more than 15 players on the injury list, but the return home will give the team strength.

Sean Everitt stated: 'We are incredibly happy to return to play in front of our fans; it feels like a long time since we had competitive rugby at home, and we, as a squad and staff, cannot wait to get on the field.' He continued: 'We know that Stormers present a different challenge, with the physical strength and directness of their forwards, as well as strong kicking play from their backline, but this is a challenge we are ready to face openly.'

Sharks use South African national players for match against Leinster at Kings Park

The Sharks squad has included South African national players in their starting lineup to face the defending champions Leinster at Kings Park stadium on Saturday evening.

United Rugby Championship

The Sharks have quickly integrated their strength by returning Andre Esterhuizen to captain a strong team against Leinster. The match is scheduled for 18:30, and all six current Sharks players from the South African national team have been named in the starting 23 after returning from international duties.

The starting six includes Esterhuizen, Thomas du Toit, and Edwill van der Merwe, while Ox Nche, Eben Etzebeth, and Ethan Hooker provide serious firepower on the bench. This is a significant addition of experience for the Sharks team, which impressively started the URC season by defeating the Ospreys 41-24 last week.

However, Leinster presents a completely different challenge. The Irish giants arrive in Durban with a squad rich in international quality, giving the Sharks an ideal opportunity to assess the progress made during the three-month pre-season period. The returning South African national players only arrived in South Africa on Tuesday but were ready to participate immediately in the game.

Team captain Fepsy Buthelezi believes that the match will show whether the tough pre-season training will start yielding consistent results. He noted that the start of the campaign against the Ospreys was very positive and benefited the group. Buthelezi added that the team analyzed its game and believes it could have performed better at certain moments, but overall it was a good start.

He emphasized the importance of the upcoming week to demonstrate how far the group has advanced and what has been discussed around the team. Buthelezi also mentioned that attack is part of their game, which they have worked hard on, and thanks to Scott Matie's return, the group reacted well to his influence. 'We scored amazing tries, and that is a really positive point,' he stated.

The Sharks demonstrated many attacking ambitions against the Ospreys, and Buthelezi believes this is an area where they can continue to develop. The Sharks squad for the match against Leinster includes: Luan Gilloomie, Edwill van der Merwe, Jurenzo Julius, Andre Esterhuizen (captain), Lily Bester, Wusi Moyo, Jayden Hendricks, Nick Hatton, Manu Tsituka, Fepsy Buthelezi, Darren Landsberg, Jason Jenkins, Vincent Koch, Esetchu Mnebelele. Reserves: Ethan Bester, Ox Nche, Hanro Jacobs, Eben Etzebeth, Matt Romao, Ivan van Zyl, Zeketelo Siyaya, Ethan Hooker. Players who will not be available: Bongani Mbonambi, Eduan Swart, Emile van Harden, Fez Mbata, Hendre Stassen, Jaco Williams, Yannis Potgiter, Jordan Hendricks, Makazole Maphimmi, Murray Koster, PK Sobale, Stefan Levis, Trevor Nyakane, Vincent Tsituka, Yaw Penxe.

Five Springboks players who could get more game time against Australia

Following limited participation in the 2026 matches, fullback Afelele FASSI is one of the Springboks players hoping to receive more minutes on the field during the game against Australia on Sunday.

After four intense matches against the All Blacks, the Springboks will face a completely different challenge against Australia in Perth in a single friendly match on Sunday. Since head coach Rassie Erasmus is expected to rotate the squad when it is announced on Tuesday for the match at Optus Stadium (starting at 11:45 South African time), this could open doors for several reserve players to gain valuable experience after limited or no time in the greatest rugby rivalry.

IOL Sport has looked at five Springboks players who will aim to impress if given more playing time against the Wallabies.

Players who could get more time

Handre Pollard is likely the most obvious candidate. He faced the All Blacks but missed all four matches due to a calf injury. He was fit and arrived in Baltimore for the final match but was not selected because Erasmus adhered to a tactic that worked in the previous two games.

A significant series of games against Australia will help him regain his rhythm at the Test level and remind everyone of his importance to the Bok squad. He has demonstrated that he is still capable of contributing to the national team.

Cameron Hanekom, a forward from the Bulls, immediately made an impression in limited opportunities against New Zealand, but improved his game with each game. His last two matches can be considered his best for the team. As veteran versatile forward Pieter-Steph du Toit plans to rest, Hanekom could get a much bigger opportunity to show what he can offer with his physical strength and work rate from the first whistle. He will strive to maintain the form he showed against the second-ranked team.

Mani Libbok, who was mainly used as an impact player during the four-match series, could benefit from more sustained time on the field in Perth. The start would give him more time to influence the game and demonstrate the attacking qualities that make him such an intriguing option at number 10. Every time he came on, the Boks' attack changed. He made almost no mistakes this season, and if the world champions decide to play running rugby, Libbok could be the man who makes the backline move. His kicks from both feet and ball distribution were valuable assets.

Morne van der Merwe gradually increased his involvement against the Kiwis and started the last match in Baltimore. As competition for the midfield position intensifies, another extended spell against Australia could give him a chance to build on this momentum and strengthen his case for more minutes in Test matches. He outperformed the more experienced Kama Roigard, and this gives the relatively inexperienced No. 9 a lot of confidence. Van der Merwe proved himself when the Boks needed him, and he should be given another starting chance.

Afelele FASSI could also benefit from returning to the starting lineup after his absence against New Zealand. With the load management in the Boks' backline, Perth provides the fullback with another opportunity to remind Erasmus of his ability and versatility. After injuries, he needs more minutes to regain confidence. The fullback helped South Africa defeat Argentina and demonstrated his stability under high ball and in attack. However, if given a chance, he will view this match against the Wallabies as an opportunity to improve his performance.

Projected Springbok Squad

The squad includes: 15 Afelele FASSI, 14 Kanan Moody, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Handre Pollard, 11 Ethan Hooker, 10 Mani Libbok, 9 Morne van der Merwe, 8 Jasper Wiese, 7 Cameron Hanekom, 6 Siya Kolisi (captain), 5 Roan Northe, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Thomas du Toit, 2 Johan Grobbelaar, 1 Gerhard Steenkamp.
