Festival in Honor of World Animal Day Takes Place at Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town

The Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town is coming alive today with a free festival celebrating World Animal Day. The event runs from 9 am to 3 pm, gathering pet owners and animal lovers.

The festival brought together over twenty animal protection groups, veterinary specialists, and local residents. The event includes demonstrations of rescue dogs, live parades, and consultations on pet care.

The event was organized by the non-profit organization Paws-A-While with sponsorship from Mars Petcare. Guests are offered advice on adoption, vaccination, preventive healthcare, and responsible pet ownership.

Paws-A-While founder, Caroline Dudgeon, noted that the celebration aims to recognize the contribution of volunteers and animal protection organizations, who often operate with limited resources. She emphasized that as the event grows, more people can be drawn into these discussions and introduced to the organizations doing this work daily.

The program features a rescue dog competition across ten categories and a parade by the Paws-A-While rescue organization, where animal protection groups will march under their banners and compete for creativity awards.

Dr. Amir Anvari, known as Amir the Vet and co-founder of Vets2Pets, will share tips on routine veterinary care and responsible pet ownership.

Adding a significant political dimension to the event, representatives from Statistics South Africa will present the public with the first national data on pet ownership obtained from the 2025 Household Survey. Festival organizers called this a turning point for animal welfare. By obtaining accurate baseline figures, authorities can move beyond assumptions and significantly improve regional planning for veterinary care, rabies prevention, and large-scale sterilization programs.

According to the survey results, 23.5% of South African households own a pet, estimated at approximately 7.4 million dogs and 2 million cats nationwide. Dudgeon stated that the goal of the event was to transform public enthusiasm into practical action. She added: 'There is immense love for animals in Cape Town, but love must translate into responsible action.' She concluded that World Animal Day provides an opportunity to combine adoption with education, sterilization, preventive care, and responsible ownership, as all these issues are interconnected.
