Orlando Pirates appeals to High Court over suspicious financial transactions

Orlando Pirates, one of the dominant clubs in the local league in recent years, has initiated an investigation into financial irregularities involving former financial manager Darryl Jozelowski.

The club responded to reports of a legal application filed by them to freeze funds related to certain financial operations. The Betway Premiership champions confirmed that they have approached the High Court as part of the investigation into these suspicious transactions, while simultaneously preparing for the MTN8 final next Saturday.

According to Pirates' forensic accounting investigation, payments totaling 20.2 million rand were identified, which the club considers unauthorized transfers to accounts controlled by Darryl Jozelowski, the club's former financial director.

A broader analysis of the transactions allegedly showed the movement of 43 million rand from Pirates' accounts to four Standard Bank accounts between September 2016 and August 2026. Furthermore, the forensic audit uncovered 742 payments totaling 8.5 million rand where the beneficiaries were falsely stated in the payment descriptions.

Pirates emphasized that this application is a precautionary measure and does not imply guilt regarding the individual involved. In a statement, the club said: 'The club has requested the High Court to freeze funds related to certain financial transactions while these transactions are under investigation. This is a precautionary step to protect the Club's funds during the process.'

The club also confirmed that the individual implicated in the case is cooperating within this process. Pirates added: 'The application is not an admission of guilt and should not be interpreted as such. The individual involved is cooperating, and the Club is committed to a fair process for all parties.'

Pirates also sought to reassure its fans, partners, and sponsors, assuring them that the situation has not affected the club's operations. The club stated: 'Our fans, partners, and sponsors can be assured that the daily operations and obligations of the Club continue as usual. Our focus remains on the team and the upcoming season.'

As the matter is now before the courts, Pirates decided to refrain from further comment regarding the details of the application. The club reported: 'We will provide updates when we are able to do so.'
