Shoaib Akhtar denies rumors of appointment as Pakistan team's chief selector

Amid speculation about changes in Pakistani cricket, former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar issued a statement regarding his future. Known as the 'Rawalpindi Express,' Akhtar completely rejected rumors of a potential appointment as the chief selector for the Pakistani team. He clearly stated that he has no intention of taking up any position in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Discussions about major changes within the PCB began after Pakistan suffered a crushing 0-3 defeat in a three-match series against England. Shoaib Akhtar's name was among the speculations regarding changes in the coaching staff and team composition. Pakistani media claimed that the former fast bowler could be entrusted with the duties of chief selector.

However, interrupting these reports, Shoaib Akhtar called them mere conjecture. During an interview on a local television channel, he stated that he has no plans to hold any position in the PCB. The program host reminded him of his previous statements, noting that Akhtar's mother advised him to stay away from Pakistani politics and the PCB. To this, the former fast bowler replied that he is still following his mother's advice.

Shoaib Akhtar emphasized: 'There is nothing like that. What they are saying is just speculation. I stick to my statement and follow this advice. There is no truth in the rumors about being appointed chief selector. It is all fake. I am not interested in working for the PCB at all. I just want what is best for Pakistani cricket.'

He also clarified that he had not held any negotiations regarding the role of chief selector with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Akhtar reported that he is currently on a private trip in Houston. In recent years, Pakistani cricket has seen a constant stream of administrative and team changes, including frequent changes in captains, coaches, and selectors, which gave significant weight to these news reports after Shoaib Akhtar's name surfaced.

Akhtar also assured that he is willing to help Pakistani cricket, but this does not necessarily require him to hold a post in the PCB. He believes there are other ways to serve cricket. Akhtar noted: 'I would like to serve Pakistani cricket, but I think I can do it in many other ways.'

Pakistani media had previously reported that Shoaib Akhtar met with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. According to reports, they discussed the state of the Pakistani national team and methods for its improvement. It was also reported that relations between Akhtar and Naqvi had improved in recent months. It was mentioned that Naqvi contacted him after the death of Akhtar's elder brother.

Muhammad Ridwan tried to speak about the phone confiscation, but the PCB rejected him twice

Pakistani wicket-batsman Muhammad Ridwan sought to publicly clarify the situation related to the investigation against him and the seizure of his mobile phone after the match at Lord's, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) did not grant him such permission. According to Geo News, Ridwan approached the board twice requesting permission to make a public statement, but both times his request was denied.

Ridwan wanted to present his perspective on the entire dispute concerning the investigation by the National Cyber Crime Agency (NCCIA). He intended to explain the circumstances of his phone's seizure after the match at Lord's and outline his position regarding the allegations made against him. Furthermore, he wished to make public information available about a letter he sent to the International Cricket Council (ICC).

According to the report, Ridwan requested permission from the PCB in accordance with the provisions of his central contract. Clause 4.1 of the contract stipulates that before making any public statements regarding any matter related to the contract, the player must obtain approval from the board. Ridwan also allegedly referenced clause 16, which provides for mutual cooperation between the player and the PCB. Sources claim that Ridwan did not intend to accuse the PCB or any other organization; he simply wanted to present the sequence of events and his stance to the public.

As of now, Ridwan's phone has not been returned. The situation began after the match against England at Lord's, when Muhammad Ridwan's mobile phone was allegedly seized for inspection. During hearings at the Lahore High Court last week, Ridwan's lawyer, Qazi Umair Ali, mentioned this incident. The lawyer stated that after the match, Ridwan was summoned to the hotel lobby for questioning, claiming he received no notification. According to the lawyer, he was promised the phone would be returned within three hours, but it has not been returned yet.

Muhammad Ridwan also contacted the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) regarding this matter. He allegedly tried to ascertain whether the ICC anti-corruption unit or the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) was aware of the actions to seize his phone or participated in them. He also raised questions concerning the procedure for seizing the mobile phone, its transfer to the relevant agency, and the forensic examination. Ridwan sought clarity on the compliance of the adopted procedure with the ICC anti-corruption code.

The NCCIA investigation is linked to online betting and gambling in Pakistani cricket. Reports also connect this investigation to an alleged leak of information from the Pakistan dressing room during a series of matches against England. Muhammad Ridwan and Imam Ul-Haq appeared before the NCCIA in Lahore earlier this month.
