Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech has introduced a high-power battery specifically designed for low-altitude aircraft. This product is based on a large cylindrical cell from the 46 series featuring hybrid solid-liquid chemistry.
The presentation took place at Gotion's own event during the World Manufacturing Convention 2026 in Hefei on September 21st. At the same event, the company also announced a cross-border solution for electric freight transport and a zero-emission digital energy platform.
According to Gotion's statements, this cell achieves an energy density exceeding 330 Wh/kg and 850 Wh/L. The company claims that the battery can sustain a continuous discharge rate of 6C and a pulsed discharge rate of 12C even when charged below 25%. Furthermore, the battery pack ensures no thermal runaway, which, according to Gotion, meets the strictest aviation standards.
The battery supports both fast charging and battery swapping, allowing the energy reserve to be replenished in less than five minutes. These characteristics are aimed at solving the specific challenges faced by electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and other low-altitude vehicles. Gotion notes that traditional battery designs struggle to simultaneously balance energy density, power, and safety.
Maintaining high discharge rates at low charge levels is critical because landings typically occur at the end of the flight when the battery is most depleted. Chinese industry publications have noted that target applications include passenger eVTOLs, heavy drones, and emergency rescue aircraft.
From an engineering perspective, Gotion reported that the cell combines a pressure relief design with an all-tab structure utilizing a hybrid solid-liquid system to ensure inherent safety and high output power. The company integrated three proprietary material science technologies covering the cathode, anode, and electrolyte with its own cell and pack-level development. The R&D team also used simulations combining artificial intelligence with physics-based models to analyze numerous design options and tune the battery for varying flight conditions.
Two other announcements expand Gotion's activities beyond cell manufacturing. The GotionGuard-ZERO cloud platform integrates AI-based energy planning, wind and solar energy management, energy storage monitoring, virtual power plants, energy trading, and carbon asset management. The logistics solution utilizes a mobile battery storage, charging, and swapping system coordinated by AI-based load forecasting. Gotion plans to establish a green freight corridor between Europe and Africa spanning 2,600 kilometers in 2026, as well as a China-Vietnam route of 2,300 kilometers in partnership.
At the convention hall, Gotion demonstrated an aviation battery alongside its lines of all-solid-state and marine batteries. The company did not disclose the customer for the launch or the timeline for mass production of the new cell.
