Rain in Espírito Santo causes flight cancellations, mass cancellations, and show postponements, in addition to flooding

Intense rains that hit Espírito Santo since early Saturday morning (3) resulted in the cancellation of eight flights, the postponement of Marcelo Falcão's show, and the inability of two chefs to arrive at a gastronomic festival in Vitória. Furthermore, the bad weather led to the suspension of masses at the Convento da Penha and caused floods in several streets of Vila Velha, in Greater Vitória.

According to the Capixaba Institute for Research, Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Incaper), the occurrence of moisture from the ocean facilitated the formation of rain clouds across much of the state.

For the following day, Sunday (4), Incaper projects winds from the north and northeast, with mostly clear weather throughout the state. The forecast points to periods of greater cloudiness during the early morning and beginning of the morning, followed by the appearance of the sun and an increase in temperatures in the afternoon. For this Saturday, there was an expectation of sun, but also sporadic rains in the South, the Mountainous region, and Greater Vitória.

Canceled Flights

At Vitória Airport, eight flights were canceled during Saturday morning due to weather conditions, as reported by Zurich Airport Brazil. These flights had departure or arrival points at the airports of Guarulhos, Congonhas, and Galeão. Passengers were instructed to contact their respective airlines for information and to arrange rebookings.

Postponed Show

Due to the rain, Marcelo Falcão's show, scheduled for this Saturday in Vitória, was rescheduled for October 17th at 4 pm. Although the singer's flight managed to take off, he could not complete the landing in the capital of Espírito Santo. The production team reported that they sought alternatives with the airline but were unsuccessful in holding the performance. Tickets already purchased remain valid for the new date, and the option of requesting a refund is offered to those who wish.

Chefs Cannot Reach Event

At the Salt, Fire & Drive Festival, chefs Henrique Fogaça and Léo Santos also could not reach Vitória. Their flights returned to their origin airports after the temporary closure of the capital's airport due to precipitation. The event organizers tried to reschedule the chefs' participation, but this was not possible due to climatic instability and other commitments. Nevertheless, the festival proceeds this Saturday, Sunday (4), and Sunday (5), in the covered outdoor parking lot of Shopping Vitória. Chef Fernando Kawasaki's masterclass was maintained.

Flooding

In Vila Velha, residents reported flooded streets in neighborhoods such as Itapuã, Cocal, Nova Itaparica, Novo México, and on Leila Diniz Avenue, in the Ibes area. The municipal administrations of Vila Velha, Cariacica, and Vitória informed TV Gazeta that, so far, they had not received notifications from Civil Defense regarding the rain.

Canceled Masses

Religious celebrations at the Convento da Penha, located in Vila Velha, were also suspended this Saturday due to adverse weather conditions. A communication released on social media informed that the Triduum Mass, scheduled for 3:30 pm, was canceled due to heavy rains. Additionally, it was notified that starting at 12 pm, the visitable area of the Convento da Penha, as well as the Chapel of São Francisco and the Snack Bar, would be temporarily closed, allowing access only up to the Campinho area. The Ladeira da Penitência was also preemptively closed to mitigate natural risks associated with the rain, especially concerning the pavement, stones, and the risk of falls.

Rain Alerts

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued three rain alerts for Espírito Santo, valid until 11:59 pm this Saturday. These warnings include yellow, orange, and red levels, with precipitation projections ranging between 50 millimeters and over 100 millimeters in a 24-hour period. There are also alerts about possible strong winds, hail, flooding, river overflow, and landslides. The red alert, classified as the most severe, covers parts of Greater Vitória, the Mountainous region, and all of Southern Espírito Santo.
